Disadvantages of JPEG

he Jpeg images are lossy, even at the maximum Paint Shop Pro compression setting of "1". Pay particular attention to the relative loss of the white, yellow and red lines in the JPEG image. Therefore, Jpeg does not handle black-and-white images. It does not work very well on non-realistic images such as cartoons or line drawing. Sharp, contrasting edges are not common in nature, and they do not fair well when Jpeg compression is pushed to its limits. Similar things such as typefaces and line art are poor subjects for Jpeg compression as well. Abrupt changes and hard edges present a problem for JPEG compression. It doesn't preserve them well, no matter how hard it tries. Therefore it can't reduce the file size substantially without image loss.

Advantages of JPEG
  1. J P E G Compression Optimization   Compress your JPEGs further with no additional loss than if you had started with the original image.
  2. Region of Interest viewing   This feature allows you to quickly decode and view a rectangle within a JPEG file without decoding the rest of the image.
  3. Region of Interest Saving   This feature allows you to quickly decode a rectangle within a JPEG file without decoding the rest of the image and save this rectangle losslessly into a new JPEG file.
  4. Lossless Rotate   This feature allows you to rotate JPEG images without uncompressing and recompressing them.
  5. JPEG Merge   This feature allows you to place a JPEG file into another JPEG file with control over the amount of light of each image, which provides a watermarking tool.
  6. JPEG Append   This feature allows you join JPEG files with other JPEG files of the same height or width without having to uncompress and recompress either image.
  7. Region of Interest compression   This feature allows you to select multiple regions within your original bitmap or JPEG file and compress each of those regions to different quality settings.
  8. Password Protection   Support password locking of your JPEG image data, which allows you to save JPEG files from the web to your system with a password.
  9. Contrast | Brightness | Color & Tint Control   minimum amount of damage to the image.
  10. Transparency   This allow a user of this technology to put two JPEG files together with the transparent regions completely invisible, allowing the background JPEG to be seen.
  11. Color to Grayscale Conversion   This feature allows you to quickly convert color JPEG files to grayscale JPEG files.
