Caffeine during pregnancy

In 1980 the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning to avoid caffeine during pregnancy.  Ever since then pregnant women have been questioning whether or not to consume caffeine. There have been studies that have linked caffeine to miscarriages, low birth weight, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, heartbeat abnormalities, and other effects.  Since caffeine is recognized as being one of the most frequently consumed drugs among pregnant women, it is important to know what effects in can have on a developing fetus.
Caffeine and Miscarriage
Studies show that there is a relationship between the amount of caffeine intake and miscarriage. One study found that as little as two cups a day could double the risk of miscarriage
Caffeine and Low Birth Weight
Researchers say that drinking too much caffeine may contribute to lower birth weight. There has been research that has showed that pregnant women who have caffeine are more likely to deliver babies that weigh less than babies born to women who did not consume any caffeine while pregnant.

This topic relates to our research of the effect of caffeine on regenerating planarian because we are comparing that process to a growing fetus.
