STAFFORD AND STONE BRANCH
Pub of the Month - December
RED LION, LITTLE HAYWOOD
The Red Lion at Little Haywood is an excellent village local that has changed little since being rebuilt in the 1930s. It has however been owned by a succession of brewers, namely Parkers of Burslem, Ind Coope, Allied Breweries, Marstons and, since last year, Banks's.
The Red Lion has been kept for the last three years by Adrian Cooper, whose father was the pub's licensee from 1965 to 1985.
Three Marstons real ales are now on sale, Bitter, Pedigree and a regularly changing Head Brewer's Choice beer. Banks's Original might soon be added to the range.
Traditional pub games are played in the bar and a brief history of the pub is displayed in the lounge. The name change from the Bowyer Arms took place about a century ago. At the side of the pub is an immaculate garden which, together with hanging baskets, has brought success in Stafford in Bloom and Best Kept Village contests.
The Red Lion is open from 4pm onwards, Monday to Thursday, and all day from 12 noon, Saturday to Sunday. It is situated in Main Road, which has been by-passed by the present main A51
