The Mackinac Island Trip

Day One Day Two Day Three Day Four Day Five Day Six Day Seven

Day two started with a trip to the Maritime Museum in Manitowoc.  They have dozens of models (great models) of all different kinds of ships and boats.  There is extensive history on the many shipyards in this area.   After we got done with the self guided tour, we took a guided tour of the U.S.S. Cobia.  This WW II Sub was given to the museum by the United States Navy.  The shipyards in Manitowoc produced 28 subs, similar to the Cobia, during WW II.  They did not, however, build the Cobia.

After the tour we went down to the beach again and enjoyed a nice lake breeze and a Coke.  Next we were off to Mackinaw City.  We ran into quite a bit of construction and two-lane roads which really slowed us down.

We got into Mackinaw City about 9:00 PM EST where we quickly checked in to our hotel, a Days Inn.  A short walk to the Mackinaw Crossings for a laser light show and then back to the hotel for dinner (since everything else had closed by the time we got done with the show).  It's midnight and we've just returned to our room.  A good nights rest awaits us in preparation for tomorrows ferry ride to the island.

See you tommorow from Mackinac Island!

Us standing in front of the U.S.S. Cobia.  A WW II Submarine which was part of the Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, WI.  If you get through this way, we recommend a couple hours here!

Our Tour Guide

Our Tour Guide, Emma, explaining what life on a sub was like.  We both decided that we probably wouldn't enjoy it.

The beach!

Manitowoc Beach.  The seagulls were "fishing" right off shore.  What a great day!

Construction - YUCK!

We ran into construction and really got slowed down on the way to Mackinaw City.  It took us about 6 hours to go a total of 300 miles.

Scenic View

A "Scenic View" along MI RT 2 just west of St. Ignace.

Mackinak Bridge

The Mackinaw Bridge connecting the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan.  Amazing!  Adam took this shot while I was driving us across the bridge.  I knew his photo skills would improve!
