Although central to successful martial arts performance, strategic and tactical knowledge is rarely made explicit by martial arts instructors. Most students are left on their own to decipher the cryptic prose of Musashi's Book of Five Rings (GO RIN NO SHO), or to attempt some understanding of Sun Tzu's Art of War. Combat Kungfu training is unique in that it not only makes such strategies and tactics explicit, they are formulated in an easy to recall structure, and are practiced through practical activities. The approach taken in Combat Kungfu underscores an important principle in martial arts, that Strategy is based on State of Mind. In other words, how you feel dictates what you will do. Consequently, four main strategic approaches have been identified, and are coded according to the theory of the Five Elements. The Black Belt will demonstrate skill at the Void level of Tactics.
