Asuka Langley Soryu. The Second Qualifier (Second Child), designated pilot of Eva Unit02. Three-quarters German, one-fourth Japanese, she was born and raised in America. She has an incredible amount of pride and therefore does not want to lose to anybody in anything. She has high confidence in her piloting skills which she would want to show off to the whole world. Unlike Shinji and Rei, she has an outgoing personality and can express her feelings easily. She has a big crush on Ryouji Kaji and thinks that he is the only cool guy there. Although she is only fourteen, she has already graduated from college. Even though she quarrels a lot with Shinji, she seems to be always with him and shows a little concern over him. "A quarrel between couples?" - Touji Suzuhara. Touji said this to them in episode 17 when Shinji forgot to make their lunches.

Her mother, Kyoko Zepplin Soryu, became insane after a synchronization accident with Unit02, and believes that a certain doll is her child, Asuka. This is the reason why Asuka hates dolls and those who "act" like dolls (e.g. Rei Ayanami). The day that Asuka was announced as the second qualifier, her mother hanged herself in front of her.
