Shinji Ikari. He was appointed as the Third Children (the Third Qualifier), designated pilot of Eva Unit 01. He is a very troubled individual who lacks self-confidence. He also has a very hard time expressing his feelings because he fears having them hurt by others. He has a poor relationship with his father, Gendou Ikari. He fears him. Losing his mother, Yui, at a very young age has made his life even more difficult. Running away seems to be Shinji's way of handling problems and troubles that come his way. Later on he has learned that running away only brings him more pain. So now he does not run away from troubles and faces them.
After a long time away from his father, Shinji recieves a letter inviting him over to Tokyo 3. Unkown to him of his fathers true intent of summoning him, Shinji goes there. There he meets Misato Katsuragi, who becomes his roommate, and gardian. While this is going on, an Angel attacks Tokyo 3.She brings him to the Special Agency Nerv where he meets his father for the first time in so many years, and where he pilots Eva-Unit01 for the first time.
