What's Going On?
Ferryhill Flyers is a course for 32 youngsters from 5 different primary schools in the region who will be attending Ferryhill Comprehensive School next term (starting September 4th 1998).

Mrs Joan Low, Head of Modern Languages at Ferryhill has drawn together a team of teachers from Ferryhill School and local primary schools to improve the children's literacy skills. The "Ferryhill Flyers" programme is an exciting mix of activities in school and out. Over two weeks children will develop their literacy skills through specific reading and writing exercises. and by describing how they made masks and pizzas, solved scientific and magician's tricks. They will visit Sunderland AFC's Stadium of Light to learn and write about the facilities that soccer fans want. They will learn how to use state of the art computing facilities at school.

Joan Low id delighted with the enthusiasm shown by children and their parents, staff and others who have volunteered to help. Joan adds, "The summer school gives children an extra chance to become more literate and more confident about learning. Our "Ferryhill Flyers" are off to a great start to their career at secondary school. They are sure to be a success".

The Summer School, one of 6 in the region, is backed by special government funding. Ferryhill School Head teacher, Steve Gater, sees the initiative as another way of actively involving children out of normal school hours. Over the holiday, the schools swimming pool and tennis courts are open to the local community. Steve notes, "Our partnership with Sedgefield Borough Council Leisure and Community Rangers is an important aspect of the development of Ferryhill School. We are trying hard to let everyone benefit from the excellent facilities and expertise available here".
