The City of Delhi

The World Famous Qutub Minar of Delhi

India Gate : The Symbol of The Raj and now of the City itself

Delhi, my home city, has been a seat of power since time immemorial. Few cities in India could claim the long continuity and status that Delhi has enjoyed. There is a reference in 'Mahabharata' regarding a city called Indrapastha, which was built along the bank of River Yamuna in the area lying between the present Kotla Feroze Shah and Humanyun's Tomb. But there is not direct evidence identifying this city with that of Delhi. However, presently, the city consists of two parts. Old Delhi and New Delhi. Old Delhi has been the capital of many mighty Hindu and Moslem empires. The only surviving link with past civilizations in old Delhi, is the walled city of Shahjahanabad. Most of the city is crowded with narrow roads and streets, especially inside the walled city and most business buildings and dwellings, which lack planned amenities. Through out the city, unauthorised constructions has been order of the day. However, New Delhi, presents a contrast with its somewhat broad and open areas. Created as the capital of India and completed in 1931, New Delhi was originally planned as the seat of British Government with government buildings to house its employees. The city has grown rapidly into a sprawling metropolis.
