What's this all about, then?

Welcome to issue number 5 of "Off Beat Lyrics", bringing you the lyrics you won't find elsewhere on the Net ... we think. Lyrics to songs that are almost or completely forgotten. Songs that - for whatever reason - aren't played on the radio anymore, have faded from view, or weren't in view in the first place, but still have interesting lyrics and/or background stories to them. Bizarre, humorous, novelty songs... Obscure or forgotten, funny or plain weird, you will be able to discover them here!

And since we're not expecting you to actually know these songs, you will find not only the words but also the music itself (or sizeable excerpts) in RealAudio format, plus a picture of the record sleeve or artist if possible.

Note: If you still haven't got RealAudio player (RealPlayer) you should get it - for free - from the RealNetworks site. Go get it now! (but please come back later...)

This Week

This week's a disco hater's special. Both songs date from 1979, when disco had reached its peak as exemplified by the success of movies like Saturday Night Fever and especially Grease - to which Gruppo Sportivo allude in their song ("it was a greasy production", indeed).

Dafne and the Tenderspots, on the other hand, clearly were on the losing side in the struggle for love that raged in the discos.

Disco Hell - Dafne and the Tenderspots

"Who the hell were Dafne and the Tenderspots", we can hear you yell. Well we haven't got a clue either. This single just blew our way in a plain white sleeve, no picture or anything on it. And we haven't found any other reference to this outfit yet. All we can tell is that this English single, like we said from 1979 - MAM Records 186 - was produced by Tab Martin and Dominic De Sousa.

If you listen to the song, you'll notice that the "ooh ooh"s were on loan from the Michael Zager Band's "Let's All Chant". The "---" in the lyrics is a sound effect that rhymes with "bum".

Disco Hell
(Packham - Smith - Nancholas - Hughes - Monnas - Wilder)
- Dafne and the Tenderspots

Chorus:
Who the hell wants to go to a disco?
Who wants to see you waggle your ---?
Who the hell wants to go to a disco?
Who wants to see you waggle your ---?

I've got no soul
I've got no rid-dem
Me and disco are in a head-on collision
I don't go to discos, can't stand the crush
I went to dancing lessons, got killed in the rush
I don't like music, when it's funky
Sung by someone with the IQ of a monkey
If I could sing like Mickey Mouse
I wouldn't have to live in a council house
So...
(chorus)

(Ooh ooh)
But I ain't black
Don't even go brown
I don't know what it's like
To "get on down"
(Ooh ooh)
It breaks my heart
Moves me to tears
I'll never "boogie woogie"
In a million years
So...
(chorus)

[Says:] Hey, do you wanna dance?
[Girl's voice:] Blimey, do I NOT wanna dance with you! And if you don't remove yourself from where me and my friends are sitting, I'm gonna call the manager. You know you're really gettin' up my nose. You've been pestering me all evening. I mean, haven't you looked in the mirror recently? I wouldn't be seen DEEP dancing with someone like you! So why don't you just go and get lost!?
[Says:] Yeah. Well, some other time then?

I don't like music, when it's funky
Sung by someone with the IQ of a monkey
If I could sing like Mickey Mouse
I wouldn't have to live in a council house
So...
(chorus)

Disco Really Made It - Gruppo Sportivo

Gruppo SPortivo (sleeve pic)
Gruppo Sportivo were a Dutch group in the late '70s, early '80s, who didn't take things too serious.
This song (note the lyrics are not entirely complete and reliable) was a single on Ariola in 1979. It was produced by Hans Vandenburg and Robert Jan Stips. Stips later was front man for the group The Nits, playing much more serious pop - their best-known song, perhaps, is In The Dutch Mountains (Hmmm. Mountains?). More recently he's been fronting his self-named group, Stips, as well as touring with Dutch comedian Freek de Jonge.

"Special limited edition on black vinyl" it says on the 7" sleeve. Man, were these guys funny!

Disco Really Made It
(Van deFruits)
- Gruppo Sportivo

She was in love with a DJ but she couldn't dance
It was a low budget disco movie romance
She had lips like a lolly but she couldn't sing
It was a greasy production - boring
In Holland they got fantasy
They're trying to do the same movie you know
Rock 'n' roll it's over now
Today it's flat comb (?)
and unga unga unga unga disco

Well well well

I was pushing through a disco on roller skates
I blame it on my tee shirt I couldn't get a date
And when the lights in the dancing floor flashed on
I couldn't keep my eyes open too long
I don't know why I fall asleep
It must be that disco beat you know
Rock 'n' roll it's over now
Today it's flat comb (?)
And unga unga unga unga disco

Disco really made it
It's empty and I hate it

Top ten (top ten)
Radio (radio)
Hello (hello)
Disco (disco)
Goodbye (goodbye)
Rock 'n' roll (rock 'n' roll)
It's all over now
And I should have known

At ...(?) told me
"They're really good
They're gonna be a smash down here in Hollywood"
That's it! Right on!
Let's go to Hollywood!
No bikes no dikes no wooden shoes - ooh ooh!
In Holland they got fantasy
They're trying to do the same movie you know
Rock 'n' roll it's over now
Today it's flat comb (?)
and unga unga unga unga disco

Disco really made it
It's empty and I hate it

Top ten (top ten)
Radio (radio)
Hello (hello)
Disco (disco)
Goodbye (goodbye)
Rock 'n' roll (rock 'n' roll)
It's all over now
And I should have known

Disco really made it
Disco really made it
Disco really made it
Disco really made it
Disco really made it
Disco really made it
Disco really made it
Disco really made it
It's empty and I hate it
