A Forgotten Page...

As you browse in the library, an old desk catches your eye. On
it lies a piece of paper, curled up at the edges, with a verse hand-
written in ink. You wonder to yourself if you should read it...

I am a woman. I demand respect.
I want to be beautiful, but I don't want to be judged by it.
I want to fit in, but I refuse to conform.
I want to do my own electrical work.

I want to be persuasive, not manipulative.
Do not call me "perky" when I am being optimistic.
I want to be an individual, but I don't want to stand out.
I want to learn to dance.

I want to be someone's mother, but not alone.
I need time to be with my children, but I have a professional career.
I want to play hockey.

I want you to know I am strong, but I need to be held when I cry.
I try to be self-confident, but I still need your encouragement.
I am willing to compromise.

I want to fall in love, but I don't want to be hurt.
I want to make my own decisions, but I like your opinions.
I want to learn sign language.

I want my husband to share in the household duties,
But please fold the clothes
my way.
I want to read Homer's "The Iliad".

I want to be a role model,
But I still need someone to look up to.
I want you to try to understand me,
But do not tell me that
you understand.
