Brilliant conditions and a pristine ground greeted players and
spectators for the first day's play in the 15 Years' State
Championships at Browne Park Rockhampton today.
Speaking at the official
opening prior to the first game, Commonwealth Bank Public
Relations Manager Mr Ron Lyons impressed on the young players the
responsibility they carry as representatives of their regions and
schools. He emphasised the high quality of behaviour seen from
previous teams, both on and off the field, and the importance of
observing the Player Code of Conduct.
GAME
1 North West vs
Metropolitan East
Metro East started well but
fell into the trap of trying to force too many passes against a
spirited North West side, according to Metro coach Jim Look.
North West coach Peter
Wilson said it was a great effort from his team, since it was
their first game together. He said the team had trained for the
first time yesterday. "Scoring three tries will boost our
confidence significantly," Wilson said.
Rickson Tola, Luke Bell,
Craig Chapman and Justin McIlroy stood out for the winners, while
Quinton Marshall, Lochlan Russell and Scott Seymour all had
strong games for North West.
Metro East
38 (R Tola 2, K Phillips 2, D Graham, M Misa, C Chapman
tries; L Bell 2, C Chapman, R Tola, S Cross goals) def North
West 12 (Q Marshall 2, L Russell tries). Half
time: Metro East 22-4. Player of match: Rickson
Tola (Metro East).
GAME
2 South West vs
Metropolitan North
"A spirited South West
came within a whisker of toppling the more favoured Metropolitan
North when they led for all but the last quarter - Metro North
did improve and rallied late to win 26-18" ........ these
words after the game from an obviously relieved Metro North
coach, Paul Pyers.
South West coach Rod
Peckett described his team's first-up effort as "very
pleasing". Peckett said, "the boys played exceptionally
well, considering they have had only one two-hour training
session before the carnival. They were in control for most of the
match, but they made some costly errors late in the game to allow
Metro North back." Peckett was magnanimous in congratulating
Metro North and wishing them good luck for the rest of the
carnival.
Andrew Cullinane, Joel
Freeman and Ben McBryde performed strongly for Metro North; Darcy
Hendricks, Carl Yeates and Geoff Smith stood out in a valiant
South West outfit.
Metro North 26 (J
Freeman 2, J Ashton, Z Walker, J Watene tries; J Ashton 3 goals)
def South West 18 (J Beck, D Scotney, C Yeates
tries; C Yeates 3 goals). Half time: South West
12-6. Player of match: Jarrad Ashton (Metro
North).
GAME
3 Wide Bay vs Peninsula
After stronger than
expected performances from perennial battlers North West and
South West in earlier games, Wide Bay produced the first surprise
result of the championships when they downed 1997 champs
Peninsula 26-12.
Wide Bay led 14-0 as the
half time siren blew, but Trinity Bay centre Ashley Graham raced
the length of the field to score a great solo try for Peninsula,
the conversion reducing Bay's lead at the break to eight points.
However Wide Bay scored two tries to one in the second half to
extend their lead and claim a spot in the top six for tomorrow's
quarter finals.
Wide Bay coach Tony Cush
said his small but mobile forward pack held the larger Peninsula
forwards who were shell-shocked when his team scored two quick
tries. "Wide Bay controlled the game and never allowed
Peninsula to settle into a pattern," Cush said.
Milton Jannusch, Nick
Parfitt and Alan Pritchard were Wide Bay's best, while in the
losing side Charlie Griffiths, Gerald Sore, Ashley Graham and Les
Drahm stood out.
Wide Bay 26
(M Ballin, M Templeman, A Pritchard, N Parfitt, A Brinkworth
tries; M Jannusch 3 goals) def Peninsula 12 (A
Graham, M Colleton tries; N Fitzgerald 2 goals). Player
of match: Milton Jannusch (Wide Bay).
GAME
4 Metro West v Sunshine
Coast
Sunshine Coast scored a
solid 26-12 victory over Metro West today, ensuring them of a
place in the top six and tomorrow's quarter finals.
Sunshine Coast coach Murray
Stanton said it was a good, hard, grinding win for the first day,
with good performances across the field. However he said there
still was room for improvement. Matt Deguara (Caloundra SHS) was
man of the match, while wingers Sagi (pronounced 'Sonny')
Tuilaepa and Jarryd Kelly both had excellent games. For Metro
West, James Haynes, Andrew Back and Ocean Taunaletia performed
strongly.
Sunshine Coast 26 (C
Cervenak, S Tuilaepa, J Kelly, S Dalton, C Watt tries; C Watt 2,
T Phillips goals) def Metro West 12 (Q
Laula-Togaluae, W Morga, M Chant tries). Half time: Sunshine
Coast 12-8. Player of match: Matt Deguara
(Sunshine Coast).
GAME
5 Darling Downs vs Northern
Following Wide Bay's win
over Peninsula, the second real surprise of the first day's play
saw Darling Downs get on top of defending champion Northern
region. "Outmuscled" was the succinct comment on his
team's fortunes by Northern coach Tony Tarnawski.
His view was shared by
Downs' coach Paul Forde, who said his forward pack had outmuscled
the opposition forwards and had provided plenty of 'go forward',
laying the platform for the backs.
Along with man of match
Michael Witt, Nathan Nixon and Phillip Wuersching excelled for
Downs, and Trevor Bowman, Luke Harlen and Sam Faust were
Northern's best performers.
Darling Downs 26 (Glen
Johns 2, L Reibelt, J Heit, G McMillan tries; M Witt 3 goals) def
Northern 16 (T Bowman 2, L Harlen, S Vella tries). Half
time: Darling Downs 10-8. Player of match: Michael
Witt (Darling Downs).
GAME
6 Capricornia vs South
Coast
Host region Capricornia
rounded off a day of surprises with a comprehensive 30-point win
over the traditionally strong South Coast region at Browne Park
today. After leading 18-0 at half time, the Capra boys went on
with the job in the second half to defeat the Coast 34-4. The
size of the margin saw South Coast finish the day ranked 12th,
while Capricornia are at the top of the heap.
In addition to player of
the match Ashley Donovan, Daniel Hoad and Wade Gaukroger stood
out for Capricornia, while Justin Hoggart, Luke Sharpe and Matt
Watson were the best for South Coast.
Tomorrow Friday,
Capricornia meets Northern region in a championship quarter
final. Defending champions Northern suffered a shock 26-16 defeat
at the hands of Darling Downs, and were ranked eighth after
today's games.
The semi finals are on
Saturday, and the championships conclude with the finals on
Sunday. The two major semi finals will be played as curtain
raisers to the Capras-Redcliffe State League match on Saturday at
5pm and 6pm.
At the close of the
championships the 15 Years Queensland Schoolboys' side will be
announced, for the National Championships in Darwin next month.
Capricornia 34 (A
Donovan 3, I Fewquandie, J Alberts, I Lacey, M Reddy tries; B
Seymour, C Bromilow, M Reddy goals) def South Coast 4 (J
Hoggart try). Player of match: Ashley Donovan
(Capricornia).
