They continued their dominance into the second half, running out winners 26-14. Metro East halfback Craig Chapman proved the big difference between the sides, scoring three tries in the second half.

Wide Bay number 18 Nathan Jensen made an excellent rugby league debut at Rockhampton. Until these championships, the North Bundaberg SHS student's big sporting interest has been in running. He had never played a game of league until he trialed for this Wide Bay team. After settling into the ways of league, he scored a try on both the third and last days.

Team management was impressed by his ability and enthusiasm, and is keen to see him further his interest with some good coaching.

Major Championship Final
Capricornia vs Sunshine Coast

Host region Capricornia won the 15 Years' State Championship today with a comprehensive victory over Sunshine Coast. Their outstanding displays over the past four days saw the home team gain seven places in the Queensland side which was named after the carnival.

The two teams fought for supremacy for the first 15 minutes without scoring. But then Capricornia kicked up a gear and ran in three tries in the next ten minutes. Centre Jermaine Alberts sparked the assault when he received the ball in a large gap midfield, raced free and evaded the opposing fullback near the line to score under the posts. Alberts scored three tries for the match.

Two minutes later Luke Fatnowna was over in similar fashion after galloping 30 metres to ground the ball in a desperate Coast tackle. Alberts scored his second try to send Capricornia to the break with a championship-winning lead 18-0. Sunshine Coast didn't score until eight minutes from full time, when fullback Joshua Shuttlewood forced his way across, but at 24-6 the game was already over. Capricornia set their seal on the trophy with two more tries in the dying minutes.

Capricornia 34 (J Alberts 3, L Fatnowna, I Lacey, D Nixon tries; C Bromilow 3, B Seymour 2 goals) def Sunshine Coast 6 (J Shuttlewood try; M Harris goal). Half time: Capricornia 18-0. Players of final: Jermaine Alberts (Capricornia); Matt Deguara (Sunshine Coast).

Player of the Carnival
Capricornia five-eighth Brett Seymour won the prestigious Commonwealth Bank award with an outstanding display of consistent brilliance throughout the four days of the championships. He was also rewarded with selection in the Queensland 15 Years team. Brett attends Mercy College Mackay.
