Another
magnificent Rockhampton morning dawned for the second day of the
championships at Browne Park. In the wake of yesterday's
interesting and surprising results, there was much after-talk and
analysis among team officials at a get together last night. The
unanimous vote was that today's quarter finals +promised some
more interesting clashes.
GAME
1 Metro West vs North West
North West met strong
opposition today when they came up against Metro West. Although
the score does not show it, North West performed well and
continue to show lots of determination.
Metro West 58 (O
Taunaletia 3, J Tol-Pae Pae 2, J Cassen 2, A Simpson 2, J
Donahue, M Lammon tries; A Simpson 7 goals) def North
West 4 (M Savuro try). Player of match: Matthew
Lammon (Metro West).
GAME
2 South Coast vs Peninsula
South Coast started
strongly and led the first half 18-4. Peninsula lifted to keep
their opponents scoreless in the second half, but couldn't make
up the leeway. Adrian Holder worked well from dummy half and
Ashley Graham in the centres pulled off two try-saving tackles.
Other players to stand out for Peninsula were fullback Gerald
Sore and second rower Les Drahm.
South Coast 18 (L
Sharpe 2, A McDonald tries; A Baillie 2, P Ramage goals) def Peninsula
10 (G Sore, A Holder tries; J Zangrande goal). Player
of match: Jason Penny (South Coast).
GAME
3 Capricornia vs Northern
After holding a narrow lead
6-4 at half time, Capricornia opened up in the second half to
demolish defending champion Northern 32-10. "Too fast out
wide", was the only comment from losing coach Tony
Tarnawski. "Impressive" might be another
apt description of the manner of Capricornia's win.
Capricornia now progresses
to the major semi finals and will play a 5pm curtain-raiser to
the Capras-Redcliffe State league game tomorrow afternoon.
Northern's loss means they are confined to the minor semi finals
tomorrow and will surrender their 1998 championship trophy.
Ian Lacey and Daniel Hoad
had strong games for Capricornia, while Luke Harlen, Trevor
Bowman and Scott Vella were the best of a beaten bunch.
Capricornia 32 (J
Alberts 2, I Fewquandie, A Cridland, A Donovan, B Crew tries; B
Seymour 4 goals) def Northern 10 (T Bowman, L
Harlen tries; T Bowman goal). Player of match: Brett
Seymour (Capricornia).
GAME
4 Wide Bay vs Metro North
In a hard-fought match,
Wide Bay grafted their way to a 22-16 win over Metro North. Both
sides were guilty of handling errors, but Wide Bay managed to
scramble better in defence in the second half.
Antonio Kufusi was very
strong in attack and defence for Wide Bay, and was ably supported
by Matt Ballin. Alan Pritchard attacked well. For Metro North,
Jarrad Ashton and Laurie Smith were very strong.
Another solid effort from
the Bay sees them progress to tomorrow's major semi finals and a
5pm appointment with the impressive Capricornia side, in a
curtain raiser to the Capras-Redcliffe State League Game. Metro
North will meet Northern region in a minor semi final tomorrow at
12noon.
Wide Bay 22 (B
Takie, A Pritchard, L Moroko, N Parfitt tries; M Jannusch 2, N
Parfitt goals) def Metro North 16 (J Ashton 2, J
Freeman tries; J Ashton, Z Barnes goals). Half time: Wide
Bay 12-10. Player of match: Nick Parfitt (Wide
Bay).
GAME
5 Metro East vs South West
Metro East 34 (Matthew
Misa, J McIlroy, R Tola, A Lewis, A Adams, C Chapman, K Phillips
tries; C Chapman 2, L Bell goals) def South West 6 (C
Green try; C Yeates goal). Player of match: Rickson
Tola (Metro East).
GAME
6 Darling Downs vs Sunshine Coast
Despite being a player
short for all but two minutes of the match, Sunshine Coast scored
a resounding 32-8 win over Darling Downs to qualify for
tomorrow's major semi finals.
"They were too
enthusiastic and too quick, and they outmuscled us," was the
Darling Downs' view of Sunshine Coast's big effort.
Matt Deguara and Adam
Ferguson had strong games for the Coast, while Nathan Nixon,
Daniel Ferriday and Logan Hawkins preformed well for Downs.
Sunshine Coast 32 (M
Harris, S Boyd, C Watt, S Tuilaepa, J Kelly, T Lea tries; C Watt
4 goals) def Darling Downs 8 (G Johns, G
McMillan tries). Player of match: Sagi Tuilaepa
(Sun Coast).
