GAME 1     Metropolitan East v Sunshine Coast       Very overcast but fine, track heavy.

Brisbane Broncos' fullback and former Queensland Schoolboy Darren Lockyer kicked off to open the championships at Kougari Oval. Metro East opened the scoring after five minutes with a try to lock Jamie Rose. Met East 4-0. However Sunshine Coast took control over the next ten minutes and scored three six-pointers before the break, with Tullawong centre Trent Clayton snaring back to back tries. At half-time Sunshine Coast led 18-4.

Sunshine Coast resumed as they ended the first half, scoring another try through replacement Carl Coert (Tullawong) after just three minutes. But Metro East replied soon after with a try to Springwood winger Garrett Griffin. Cleveland's Luke Robison converted and Metro East trailed 22-10.

Metro East's relief was short-lived however, Kawana hooker Paul Cohen scoring for the Coast four minutes later. Caloundra halfback Mark McManus converted for his fourth goal from five attempts. Sunshine Coast 28-10.

With ten minutes remaining Metro East went over again with lock Jamie Rose scoring his second. Sunshine Coast leading 28-14. Metro East had the final say when Cavendish Road halfback Jason Conners raced over. Luke Robison converted as the siren sounded, Sunshine Coast defeating their by now traditional rivals, 28-20.

Coast coach Ron Greentree said it was a solid starting performance from his team, although he said they need to tighten up their defence after allowing some soft tries. He said they were impressive with the ball, backs Trent Clayton and Brent Tate standing out.

Metro East coach John Bellamy said his team showed a lot of character and courage in not giving in and coming back from a big deficit. He said they were caught out on one side three times by the Coast "3 & 6" combo, yielding a try on each occasion. Bellamy said, "there is plenty to build on."

Sunshine Coast 28 (T Clayton 2, A Zipf, C Coert, P Cohen tries; M McManus 4 goals) def Metro East 20 (J Rose 2, G Griffin, J Conners tries; L Robison 2 goals). Half-time: Players of match: Brent Tate (Sunshine Coast), Ailaou Chong-Wee (Metro East).

GAME 2     Metropolitan North v North West

"Fairly ordinary", was Metro North coach Jim Box's summation of his team's 46-0 defeat of last year's wooden spooner North West in their opening match of the championships. Metro North were worthy runners-up last year, and Box obviously expected his charges to start more convincingly against the perennial strugglers of the championships.

He said they had "much to do to match it with the top sides" in the coming rounds. Ex-Peninsula flyer Justin Hodges shone for Metro North with a three-try performance.

Ater suffering a spate of late replacements - almost an annual ordeal for these battlers - North West coach Garry Woodford simply described his team's 46-0 loss as, "a gutsy performance".

Metro North 52 (J Hodges 3, S Tronc 2, R Low, D Hegarty, D Cooper, C Hearn, A Parker tries; D Cooper 2, J Hodges 2, C Hearn, R Low goals) def North West 0. Players of match: Justin Hodges (Metro North), Evan Ahwing (North West).

GAME 3      Peninsula v South West

Despite the 50-0 scoreline in their favour, Peninsula coach Scott Whybird said his team's timing was "a bit out", and that they missed a lot of opportunities. However he said the defending champions played better late in the second half, showing promise for coming clashes. He said that at these carnivals the first game is often the hardest, and that he was "glad to have it over".

South West coach Andrew Peach said his team made too many simple mistakes, with unforced handling errors the main culprit. He said the resultant glut of possession enjoyed by the opposition, "killed us". But he said team spirit was high .... "they will come back tomorrow..... they are a young side, mainly Year 11's, and they will learn." As his standout players Peach nominated second row pair Matt Davies and Adam Greer (man of match), and fullback Anthony Cross.

Peninsula 50 (C Lawton 2, T Dickenson 2, S Sheppard, C Arnol, D Johnson, D Garama, G Summers tries; S Sheppard 7 goals) def South West 0. Players of match: Dallas Johnson (Peninsula), Adam Greer (South West).

GAME 4     Metropolitan West v Capricornia

As expected, this proved to be one of the two most hard-fought of the six games played today, with Capricornia just having the upper hand at half time, 4-0. One try each in the second half saw the final result 10-4 to Capricornia.

Better preparation than in previous years with at least a couple of runs together, saw Capricornia coach Neale Crow comfortable with his team's starting performance. He said the hard hit out was a good test for the team, with another tough game in the offing tomorrow against Sunshine Coast, who were ranked fourth after today's games. (See Update item: Family tradition drives Capra coach).

Capricornia 10 (L Georgeson, A Barba tries, A Barba goal) def Metro West 4 (J McEwan try).
Players of match: Dave Matsen (Capricornia), Ben Czislowski (Metro West).

GAME 5    Northern v Wide Bay

Northern 40 (A Payne 2, S Corbett, J Anderson, C Donghi, M Bowen, P Wapau tries; J McKay 6 goals) def Wide Bay 16 (T O'Shea 2, S McIntyre tries; S Irwin 2 goals). Players of match: Kieran Quagliotto (Northern), Troy O'Shea (Wide Bay).

GAME 6    South Coast v Darling Downs

South Coast scored a thrilling last-minute win over Darling Downs in the final game today. Downs led 6-0 at the break, and Coast had pulled back to trail 4-6 until the dying moments. Then a backline sweep saw replacement Grant Lewis score near the posts to snatch victory 8-6. Coast coach Paul Dawson paid credit to the strength of the Downs team.

South Coast 8 (T Casey, G Lewis tries) def Darling Downs 6 (S Weatherall try; C Martin goal). Players of match: Blake Henzell (South Coast), Shaun Weatherall (Darling Downs).
