However they came again, and with barely one minute to the siren, their second assault brought success with Brock Schrag going over. The siren blew with Met West leading 12-4.

Darling Downs began the second half with a vengeance, and Nick Walker scored after just two minutes. The conversion put Downs back in touch, trailing 10-12. Four minutes later Downs gained the lead when five-eighth Nat Volz went over and Thurston converted.

With three minutes left Metro West replied with a try from five-eighth Aaron Bulow after some sharp passing in the Downs corner, and the scores were locked at 16-16. The siren blew the draw, and as the first try scorer, Metro West was declared the winner.

Five minutes after the break Sunshine scored a converted try to make it 20-6. Each side scored again to see South Coast leading 26-10. Major Championship Final
Northern v Peninsula

Northern region claimed the open schoolboy rugby league State Championship with a comprehensive 32-12 caning of North Queensland rivals Peninsula, in muddy conditions at Kougari Oval. It was a sweet victory for the Townsville boys, who lost the title to Peninsula last year. The strength of their performances at Wynnum saw Northern gain seven places in the Queensland Open Schoolboys' team which was announced at the close of the carnival.

With Northern leading 10-0 and five minutes left to half time, Kirwan's Michael Luck made a strong charge from mid-field and off-loaded to winger Edmund Chapman, who scored untouched under the posts. Northern 14-0. They went to the break with a surprising 20 point margin over the defending champions, after Kieran Quagliotto scored and Justin McKay converted.

Northern resumed their assault with Justin McKay scoring after 8 minutes. He converted his own try, and Northern led 26-0. However Peninsula were able to put a move on, which saw Clint Arnol go over. The conversion eased the Peninsula embarrassment just a little, at 26-6. But Northern had not finished the rout, and Adam Fletcher scored another try which McKay converted, for a shock 32-6 lead over the champs.

Peninsula scored again late in the game, but the result by then was sealed. Northern region had wrested back the championship trophy which Peninsula claimed from them last year.

Northern 32 (K Quagliotto 2, J Anderson, E Chapman, J McKay, A Fletcher tries; J McKay 3, M Bowen goals) def Peninsula 12 (C Arnol, M Kidner tries; S Sheppard 2 goals). Players of match: Michael Luck (Northern); Dallas Johnson (Peninsula).
