H Capricornia v Peninsula
Steady overnight
rainfall on the normally pristine field, already churned up by
rain and two days of league action, saw play resume today in wet
and muddy conditions, albeit with a break in the rain.
GAME
1 Metropolitan East v South West
South West took
the early lead when Ryan Capes scored after about ten minutes.
But this only spurred Metro East into action, and they opened up
to overpower the perennial battlers 24-4 by half-time. The
trend continued after the break, the city boys downing their
country cousins 38-4.
Metro East
38 (S Bethan, J Conners, S Cumming, R Fletcher, L
Robison, A Simmons, T Tongia tries; D McIlwain 3, L Robison, R
Fletcher goals) South West 4 (R Capes try).
Players of match: Jason Conners (Metro East); Matt
Davies (South West).
GAME
2 Wide Bay v North West
Wide Bay
22 (T O'Shea 2, C Tydhoff, L Medley tries; S Irwin 3
goals) def North West 4 (K Lloyd try). Players
of match: Damian Cavanagh (Wide Bay); Evan Ah Wing
(North West).
GAME
3 Metro West v South Coast
South
Coast 26 (G Lewis, M Pembroke, C Curcio, R Shaw, D
Tangatatoa tries; C Brooker 3 goals) def Metro West 0.
Players of match: Corey Parker (South Coast); Thor
Ropati (Metro West).
GAME
4 Sunshine Coast v Darling Downs
For the major
part, this game on a heavy muddy field was anybody's. The two
sides fought out what looked like being a scoreless first half,
until Trent Clayton charged over for a Sunshine Coast try seconds
before half-time. Halfback Mark McManus made no mistake with the
conversion, and Coast went to the break leading 6-0.
Darling Downs
bounced back from their temporary setback and levelled the scores
at 6-6 soon after the resumption, when Brett Johnson went over
and Thurston converted. A drawn game looked a possibility again,
as the two sides fought hard to gain the advantage. Eventually
Coast broke through for their second try, and sealed the match
with another in the dying stages.
The result will
see Sunshine Coast meet South Coast in the Minor Championship
Final tomorrow at 9.30am, while Darling Downs
will play Metro West at 8.30 in the playoff for 7th and 8th.
Sunshine
Coast 16 (T Clayton, A Zipf, C Carter tries; M McManus 2
goals) def Darling Downs 6 (B Johnson try; J
Thurston goal). Players of match: Cameron Boaza
(Sunshine Coast); Jaiman Lowe (Darling Downs).
GAME
5 Metro North v Northern
This match-up between two
of the strongest performing teams went as predicted, proving a
tough and tight contest. Northern drew first blood and scored the
only points of the first half, leading 6-0 at the break. After
half-time Metro North's determination paid off, producing two
converted tries for a 12-6 lead over Northern. It seemed as
though some pundits were about to be proven wrong.
But with twelve minutes
left Northern were in again for a six-pointer, and it was
anyone's game. For ten minutes the two sides slogged it out on
the growing mud-patch, until a penalty kick was awarded to
Northern right in front. Justin Hodges made no mistake with his
kick, and Northern had a two-point buffer with time fast running
out. The siren went with Northern in front 14-12.
Northern
14 (M Luck, A Payne tries; J McKay 2, M Bowen goals) def
Metro North 12 (D Hegarty, T Casey tries; C
Hearn 2 goals). Players of match: Callan Donghi
(Northern); Dustin Cooper (Metro North).
GAME
6 Capricornia v Peninsula
Another terrific tussle
that went right down to the wire. The scores were locked at 10-10
at half-time after Luke Georgeson scored a try for Capricornia in
the final minute of the first half. The second half was a hard
slog for no result until ten minutes from full-time, when
Peninsula's Justin Brown barged over for a 14-10 lead.
Peninsula had the better of
territory for the remaining few minutes until, just one minute
from full-time, Peninsula centre David Garama found himself
unmarked in a large gap right under the posts. The ball quickly
found him, and he pounced over to score the try which sealed his
team a berth in the major championship final tomorrow.
With their gutsy
performance today Capricornia was also worthy of a place in the
final. However they will contest the play-off for third and
fourth with Metro North.
Peninsula 20 (D
Johnson, C Lawton, J Brown, D Garama tries; S Sheppard 2 goals)
def Capricornia 10 (A Barba, L Georgeson tries;
W Carlos goal). Players of match: Dallas Johnson
(Peninsula); Walson Carlos (Capricornia).
