GAME 1    Metro North v Metro West

A seesawing and gripping championship quarter final between these two city teams saw the second day's play off to an interesting start. Metro West scored first after about ten minutes, but Metro North replied quickly to level at 4-4. From here they played catch-ups, with Metro North having the final say at 16-14.

Metro North 16 (J Hodges, S Tronc, J Wood tries; C Hearn 2 goals) def Metro West 14 (T Riggs, B Warner, S Hardwicke tries; T Riggs goal). Players of match: Shane Tronc (Metro North), Ben Warner (Metro West).

GAME 2    South West v North West

As expected, this proved a dour but interesting Consolation Cup contest between these two traditional battlers of the championships. South West had the better of things for most of the match, leading 18-4 at half time and 22-10 with only minutes left.

But North West five-eighth John Fickling sparked his side just five minutes from full time, when he took a timely intercept mid-field and raced three defenders fifty metres to the line. His stamina held out barely long enough for him to score under the posts. The conversion by Desmond Pilcher saw North West trailing 16-22, and still in with a chance.

The North West resurgence continued with halfback Brandt Pattison scrounging a try from a ruck on the line with only two minutes remaining. From near the sideline he made a respectable attempt at the conversion which would have salvaged a draw, but the kick went wide.

South West 22 (A Wharton, R Capes, C Stringer, J Worland tries; A Greer 3 goals) def North West 20 (J Sturt, J Burgess, J Fickling, B Pattison tries; P Derrick 2 goals). Players of match: Ryan Capes (South West), John Fickling (North West).

GAME 3    Metro East v Wide Bay

The first half of this Consolation Cup match saw Metro East power away to a 16-0 lead at half time, and a big win looked likely. But Wide Bay came back to hold Metro East and in fact outscore them 6-4 in the second half.

Metro East 20 (L O'Regan, A Chong-Wee, S Bethan, T Tongia tries; L Robison, D McIlwain goals) def Wide Bay 6 (S McIntyre try; S Irwin goal). Players of match: Hale Vaasa (Metro East); Troy O'Shea (Wide Bay).

GAME 4    Northern v South Coast

"They should be the two finalists", was how one keen observer saw the participants in this hard-fought contest, which ended with a narrow win to Northern. However South Coast must now be content to fight out the minor semi finals tomorrow, while Northern have firmed as contenders for the championship trophy.

The score was locked at 6-6 with eight minutes left on the clock, when Abergowrie's Matthew Bowen chipped and regathered inside the Coast 30 metres, then slipped the ball to schoolmate Daniel Obodin. The number 15 evaded several defenders close to the line and scored under the posts, breaking the deadlock. The conversion gave Northern a handy 12-6 lead, with time running out.

South Coast were not finished however, and two minutes later they replied when Grant Lewis went over after a passing rush at the line. Players and spectators were hushed as the conversion was attempted - Coast had scored the first try, and a draw would give them a passage to the major semis. But the attempt missed, and Northern instead will fight for top honours tomorrow.

South Coast coach Paul Dawson was magnanimous about his team's narrow loss (remember the Dawson twins Paul and Chris who played for the now defunct Newtown club in the 70s)? He said that although the tough encounter could have gone either way, Northern deserved to win. He agreed that the game deserved to be the grand final.

A critical moment in the fortunes of the two teams came when a Coast player was sinbinned for ten minutes, during which time Northern scored.

Northern 12 (C Donghi, D Obodin tries; M Bowen, J McKay goals) def South Coast 10 (B Davis, G Lewis tries; B Henzell goal). Players of match: Kieran Quagliotto (Northern); Nathan Jordan (South Coast).

GAME 5    Sunshine Coast v Capricornia

This contest followed predictions and became an engrossing encounter. Capricornia opened the scoring after just four minutes to lead 6-0, and from there it was another seesawing effort. The Capra boys led 12-10 after the break until, with 15 minutes to go, Sunshine Coast took the lead 16-12. But Capricornia scored in the dying moments to level at 16-16.

Aaron Barba set up his conversion attempt as the siren blew. The kick was successful, and Capricornia had secured a place in the final four. Sunshine Coast will line up tomorrow in the minor championship semi finals.

Capricornia 18 (A Barba, W Carlos, J Fatnowna tries; W Carlos 2, A Barba goals) def Sunshine Coast 16 (J McArthur, T Clayton, J Walker tries; M McManus 2 goals). Players of match: Aaron Barba (Capricornia); Mark McManus (Sunshine Coast).

GAME 6    Peninsula v Darling Downs

Another engrossing tussle to round off the second day of the championships. At half time Peninsula led 6-4, and were able to add just one converted try in the second half. Peninsula now go into the top four, and in the major semi finals tomorrow will tackle Capricornia, promising a mighty clash.

Peninsula 12 (C Arnol, C Glaspy tries; L Nayda goal) def Darling Downs 4 (J Thurston 2 goals). Players of match: Clint Arnol (Peninsula); Johnathon Thurston (Darling Downs).
