The first thing you will need to do in order for you to be able to upload a file to your space on the net is download a software program which will help you to accomplish this easily. This is imperative if you are building a page. There are quite a few file transfer protocol or FTP client programs free for you to download at Tucows. They have freeware and shareware programs which you can download for use with both Windows 3.1 and Windows 95/98. I use WS-FTP Pro. It is a snap to use. Once you download it and install it on your machine all you need to do is set it up for your server.
WS-FTP is easy to set up. This will help you to connect to your site. First you have to tell the program that this is a a New connection and input your site information, for example:
Profile Name: Your own words for - Your Website Name Host Name: your ISP gives you a host name Host Type: automatic detect User ID: Your user name or name your ISP gives you Password: Your PASSWORD here *click save password* so you don't have to remember it but write it down anyhow! you leave this screen or it won't be there when you pull up the screen again! |
You can test it by going online to your website with your browser, then you can bring up your FTP client program which in this case is WS-FTP and connect with it then you will see a window with local system on the left (your hard drive) and remote system on the right (Your website). You can see the files listed on your screen.
There are options on this programs menu, that you may select to tell it to prompt for file names if you wish. All you have to do is highlight the files on your system you want on your website and push the send arrow or you can double click the file you want to send over...it works the same. One thing you must also know is that if you do not use automatic in all cases you must BE SURE to send HTM and/or HTML files as ASCII and other kinds such as *gif *jpg *mid as binary.
This should work for you. If you must change any of the above options it would be the host type if host type *automatic detect* does not work use UNIX (standard). (It is in the pull down menu.) If that does not work try another. Your server administrator (ISP) should be willing and able to help you set your FTP up for the first time. Good luck!
This is not hard just remember to SAVE the info when you set it up then look at the options you have and tell it to save your options too.
Remember the best thing to do if you want to build your web page, is first look up information about HTML and learn it. Use Note Pad to type your page coding out. You can view your page in your browser from your own hard drive. After you have learned about HTML, you can then better judge which HTML program will work best for you. A good HTML editor is HomeSite. There are many other kinds of web editors around. Go and look for them on the net there are many you can download and try out.
Good Luck...and I'm sure before long you'll get the hang of it.....its a snap!!!!
