Day of Event

The morning of July 11th came very fast. At 7:00 a.m., Chuck and I reported to Hitchcock pool to set up the event. I had a few volunteers show up later so that they could be assigned to their station. That morning we had to set up the check in table. Teams had to report at a certain time, if they were late they were penalized. The aquatic director and an area supervisor ran the check in table so that Chuck and I could get other people ready to go. Manikins were laid out, and victims were put in their assigned area. Volunteers and judges showed up 20 minutes early so that they could ask any last minute questions and get any other things ready to go.

At 7:50 am, all team captains reported for a captain meeting. This just talked about what they had to do, and let them ask any questions that they had for us. The captain meeting was very short and to the point. There should not be any major problems at this point; otherwise the planning wasn't done very well.

At 8:00 the events started. Teams went around to what ever event they wanted to go to. They were not required to be in any area at any time. We did this because some events took much longer than other events. Teams were given a checklist and they had to keep track of where they needed to be. Lines for events were never very long, and we did see no major problem doing it this way.

We did have a couple of appeals. None of them ended up being major. No scores were affected to the point it would make someone lose. All the events ended by 10am on both days. We were expecting that they would go on until 12pm. As said before, we hope to continue a lifeguard competition. In the future we would like to invite other teams, and let other people attend. Members of the American Red Cross and members of the city of Omaha Parks and Recreation Department would like this event to become statewide. This event was a major success for us. Mostly because of the great planning. Many times, Chuck and I would plan for the worst. Always have a back up plan ready to go.

Below are the results of the event:
1st place: Hitchcock Pool
2nd place: Gallagher Pool
3rd place: Miller Water Park

All of the teams did an outstanding job, and deserve two thumbs up for all of their hard work and dedication. GREAT JOB TEAMS!

A special thanks to Chuck Williams for all his hard work and dedication. This event could not have taken place without his help. He has helped me to learn so much. Thank-you Chuck!

Also deserving of much thanks is the many volunteers who graciously gave up their time to help out at this event. Thanks again everyone!
