First Aid / CPR

Overview

The First Aid and CPR event had 4 different scenarios within the event. When the team approached the station they were divided into four individual events. The team member only had to perform 1 scenario and they were done with this part of the competition. The event was set up to test the lifeguards first aid or CPR abilities.

The four different categories are listed and explained below:

Severe Bleeding: Tested lifeguards knowledge in recognizing shock and treating a victim for shock while at the same time dealing with severe bleeding.

CPR: This scenario tested the lifeguards' ability to perform 1 person CPR on a child.

Broken Arm: The lifeguards had to follow the standards for putting on a sling and at the same time provide great treatment.

Rescue Breathing: The lifeguard had to demonstrate proper rescue breathing on an adult victim.

Scoring

The First Aid events were times. When the participant was ready to go they would look up at the judge and the judge would then say go. The stopwatch would start, and then when the lifeguard was done, they would look up and say done. If they would make a mistake they were given a 6-second penalty time. If they kept making the same mistake, they would just have more time added on to their original time. Times were evaluated and the team with the top time received 30 points, the second place team received 25 points and the third place team received 15 points. All other teams received 10 participation point.
