Gemini, the Twins |
|
| Jupiter, the god, was a woman chaser and his affection was given to a married mortal woman by the name of Leda. Leda was married to the king of Sparta, Tyndareus. In order to seduce her, Jupiter turned himself into a swan. From their encounter, Leda bore 2 eggs. One egg produced the twin brothers Castor and Pollux; while the other egg produced sisters Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra. The twins that Jupiter sired is unknown as there are various stories. | |
| Castor and Pollux were inseparable in any case. Castor was a skilled horsetamer for which he became famous. Pollux was a splendid boxer which lead to his fame. The brothers joined Jason and the Argonauts in search of the golden fleece. While at sea there was a terrible storm. During the storm two stars appeared over the heads of Castor and Pollux and suddenly the stormed ended. Castor and Pollux became associated as the patron saints of travelers at sea. | |
| Both twins were known to be high spirited individuals in search of adventure. Unfortunately, Castor died during a battle and Pollux became inconsolable. Eventually Pollux went to Jupiter and pleaded with him to bring Castor back to life. In turn, Pollux was willing give up his life as payment. Jupiter, impressed with the love and devotion that the brothers had for each other, placed the twins in sky as twin stars in the constellation Gemini. | |
