Sagittarius, the Archer |
|
| Chiron was a centaur, half man and half horse, who was the son of Saturn. Chiron was a friend to god and mortal. The gods taught different things such as prophecy, hunting, medicine, riding and music. In turn, Chiron taught other men in specific arts that were suited to that persons needs. Some of his students were Jason, Achilles, Castor and Pollux, and Hercules. | |
| One day Hercules was hunting and accidentally struck Chiron in the knee with a poison arrow. Since Chiron was immortal and could not die, he suffered the agony of dying. Hercules promised to find death to release him. In his search Hercules came upon Prometheus. Prometheus was tied to a rock by Jupiter for having given fire to the humans. Prometheus would suffer the torture of a bird eating his liver until someone would freely step into his place to suffer. | |
| The dying Chiron took Prometheus' place and the curse was fulfilled. Chiron was allowed to die and Prometheus was set free by Hercules. After Chiron's death, Jupiter placed Chiron in the heavens in the constellation Sagittarius to reward him for his deeds. |
