Virgo, the Virgin

Virgo is the goddess of purity and innocence, Astraea. Before the creation of man and animals, the world was ruled by giants called Titans. Two of the titans were brothers Prometheus and Epimetheus. They were given the assignment of creating animals and humans. Epimetheus gave out the gifts to the animals - wings, claws, fur, teeth, etc. He was a generous soul and had given out all the gifts before he got to the humans.
Epimetheus went to his brother Prometheus and asked for helped. Prometheus went to the heavens and brought back the gift of fire for humans. This made the human beings superior to the animals because he could keep himself warm, make tools and weapons, and eventually develop farming and trade as well as open the door to science.
When Jupiter found out that one of the secrets of the gods was given to humans he became furious. He had Prometheus bound to a rock where a bird tore at his liver and he would suffer until someone of their own free will would take his place. Jupiter then sent a curse to earth via the first woman.
That first woman was Pandora; and she brought with her a box which she was never to open. Curiosity got the better of Pandora and she opened the box only to let loose plagues that would torment mankind forever. Those plagues were sickness and death to the body; and anger, revenge and envy for the mind. There was one thing that was still in Pandora's box that had not escaped - hope.
During the times of plague that followed, the gods deserted the earth one after the other to live in the heavens. The last to leave was Astraea. When she left, her likeness was placed in the sky and became the constellation Virgo.
