CLASS 33 NOTES

BRCW Type 3 D6500 was British Rail's first Type 3 locomotive in use and the first locomotive fitted with ETH (Electric Train Heating) entering service in December 1959.

Locomotives D6501 - D6585 were built from 1960 - 1962 These were all allocated to Hither Green and used on the Southern Region.

Locomotives D6586 - D6597 were built to a narrow loading guage to suit the Hastings to Tunbridge Wells route and became Sub class 33/2.

In 1965/1967 Nineteen locos were fitted with high level jumpers, three piece end handrails, gangway vestibule rubbing plates, drophead buckeye couplers, large diameter retractable Oleo buffers and electrical control gear for Push-Pull working over the non electrified mainline from Bournemouth to Weymouth. The tail lights were also removed as the red headcode blinds were considered to be sufficient. A small socket was also fitted to the cab fronts to power the warning bell and flashing light used for working boat trains along the line on Weymouth Quay

1967-1988 The Branksome - Weymouth push-pull workings with 4 TC and SR EMU sets operated until 1988 when the third rail electrification was extended from Branksome to Weymouth and the Class 442 Wessex Electrics were introduced.

All 98 locomotives entered service in BR green livery with light grey roof and off white window surrounds with a 3 inch wide off white stripe along the middle of the body sides which extended round the cab fronts. D65xx numbers were carried below all four cab side windows.

From 1962 to 1968 yellow warning panels were added to all members of the class.

In 1968 / 1969 all class members except two were repainted in allover BR blue with full yellow ends. D6502 was withdrawn in May 1964 and scrapped in July 1964 still in original green livery. D6576 was withdrawn in November 1968 and scrapped in March 1969 carrying green livery with half-height yellow warning panel.
