PROFILE
-
After completion of my standard
ten at Lowveld High School, Nelspruit, I secured a position with the SADF
permanent force in the Infantry Division. Although fulfilling my
desire to serve my country, the job offered limited challenges and no scope
for real individual growth.
-
Joined Pick
‘n Pay Supermarkets in Natal during March 1986 and gained extensive
experience in all aspects of retail management as a trainee manager, before
being promoted to assistant manager. Held the record for being the
quickest promoted trainee manager through the ranks.
-
Was offered a better management
position with Albany Bakeries
in Grahamstown with long term growth opportunities and left Pick ‘n Pay
Supermarkets in November 1988. I was afforded the opportunity
of gaining first hand knowledge of the various departments with Albany
Bakeries and was promoted three months later to sales manager in Port Elizabeth,
covering the Eastern Cape and Border areas. Rationalisation in the
group saw me move back to Grahamstown, this time as bakery manager.
Held the record for being the youngest bakery manager in the group.
-
Left Albany Bakeries to try
my hand at running my own business in Grahamstown, which was a café,
bakery and vegetable shop serving the community, informal sector and institutions.
Embarked on a tremendous learning curve and had a lot of fun, but unfortunately
did not make any money.
-
Secured a position with Resinite
(Pty) Ltd., a large national packaging company as a sales representative
in Port Elizabeth and was promoted and transferred within 4 months to Durban
in the capacity as regional manager for Natal. Working in a competitive
environment, I have grown the Natal region from 260 tons per annum in 1991
to a budget of 900 tons in 1995. Although results were consistently
achieved, the job promised to become mundane and did not offer me the personal
growth I desired.
-
I accepted a position with
Corobrik as Sales & Marketing
manager for the Eastern Cape Region, an exiting and challenging task during
the short lived RDP. The down turn in the building industry and subsequent
consolidation coincided well with an opportunity to enter the field of
consultation.
-
Initially in partnership
with a well known motivational speaker, I went on to establish my own company,
Lateral Concepts, specialising in sales training, work force alignment,
management & leadership development and organisational development.
Some of the clients that I have worked with on an ongoing basis are SA
Breweries, Coca Cola Sabco, Bonnita and Expeditors.
I developed all the sales training material currently used by Goodyear
and their distribution chain. Aside from the training I write regular
articles for Successful Salesmanship and give motivational speeches at
conferences.
-
In spite of the success,
being self-employed has certain drawbacks, security & cashflow not
the least of them, therefore I have entered the formal job market again.
Is selecting a new challenge my criteria was based on a company that would
allow me the intelectual freedom to exploit my potential while at the same
time providing a secure base for personal development and global exposure.
I am pleased to have found such a company in Motivaction
(Pty) Ltd, where I am employed in the capacity of Projects Director.
I know that I am working for a company that needs and values my skills,
and will offer the opportunity of further growth and development.
