James Brodie's father (Robert) died at the age of 96 yo when James was 9 years of age. James Brodie had two brothers, namely, Robert, who died at 22 and David, who died at 21, when just ready to enter the ministry. The family lived at Lochwinnoch village in Renfrewshire. James was born 14 Oct. 14, 1798, and died 86 years after. He went to farming 3 miles south of the village of his birth, on the border of Ayrshire. His brother, who had leased a large farm in Ayrshire, died before the drops were gathered. This threw both farms on to James Brodie's care, when he was about 15 years old. He moved then, to a afrm near Greenoch, for a few years, and then moved to the border of Ayrshire near Kilbournie, - about two and one half miles from the place of his birth and stayed there until coming to America in 1847. (Brief history of James Brodie in Scotland and before coming to the US as given by his son William Brodie (DOB 1840), who died shortly after thereafter: written by Hugh H. Brodie (DOB 1855) my great uncle brother to James L. Brodie (DOB 1854).
