
The main purpose of having the replication ability in Lotus Notes is to allow the user to access his/her e-mail offline. However, there are some users that have been identified to use this method to backup his/her e-mail; as creative as they are, is not a prudent practice.
The diagram below illustrates how a replication works.
Before any replication could take place, a new mail replica has to be created, first.
1) Creating a New Replica.
a) Select Mail Icon.
b) Right click on Mail Icon. A pop up menu will appear.
c) Select Replication - > New Replica.
d) A Dialog Window as shown below will appear.
e) Select Local as the server.
f) Select the replica's name (Default is mail\[username].nsf - which is good enough
to use it as it is)
g) Click OK. Allow some time for the creation of the replica to be completed. (The
larger the mailbox size is, the longer it will take to create a new replica)

As stated above under Key Concepts and Push and Pull, the replication method is not an ideal way to backup user's e-mail. Here's why:-
