Warren Ellis on The Authority
Book One of this story was STORMWATCH Vol 1 issues 37-50. StormWatch was the United Nations' Special Crisis Intervention Team, a huge organization built around a squad of superhuman field officers, all based upon a vast orbital platform called Skywatch. These were cold, twisted, bitter little stories of politics, conspiracy and a handful of people trying to save the world from itself.

Book Two was STORMWATCH Vol 2, which ran eleven issues. Freed from the mad tyranny of its previous commanding officer, StormWatch endeavored to become a more ethical unit, making a finer world. But the world got stranger and bigger, and finally, two large and big for StormWatch to survive in it.

This is, therefor, the third act in a larger story -- and before you start coughing into your fist and sneaking out the side door, I'm telling you now that you wont need the two previous stories to follow this one. All will be explained over the coming months.

You've just read the opening chapter in Book Three, THE AUTHORITY. Everything has changed -- except for the one theme that runs through the whole damn thing. This is about making a better world. It may well BE a world that's suddenly gone nuts, exploded into a widescreen two hundred million dollar fantasy of skies full of super-bastards and The God Of Cities standing side by side with a women who's got nine pints of bacteria-sized machinery instead of blood...

...but these stories have always been about that thing that superhero stories never seem to get around to. Making the world a finer place than it was when they found it.

The difference in THE AUTHORITY is simply that they simply have to beat up over a thousand people an issue to do it. And what's wrong with that?

This is THE AUTHORITY. Pay Allegiance. Or get your head kicked in.
