Formed in 1887 by Rev. Tiverton Preedy as Barnsley St Peters.
Joined the football league in 1898.
FA Cup Finalist in 1910. "Battling Barnsley" Won FA Cup in 1912. Beat West Brom 1-0 in Replay at Bramall Lane Sheffield so are the only team to win the FA Cup in Yorkshire. (A picture of some fans of this time appeared in the June or July 1996 4-4-2 magazine. This is the final and clinching proof of Time Travel as Tom Baker appears in the background.)
Close to Promotion to the Top flight in 1919 when Arsenal were elected to there even though Barnsley finished 3 places above them in the last complete season played before the War. Then in 1925-1926 they missed out on a goal average of 1 tenth of a goal.
The most famous players of the 50's included Cecil McCormack, Danny Blanchflower and Tommy Taylor.
Famous players from the 70's and 80's included Ronnie Glavin and David Hirst.
Promoted to the Old 2nd Division (Now First Division) in 1981 and have stayed there ever since.
1990-1991. Finished 7th by 4 goals behind Middlesborough in 6th.
Summer 1991. Steve Agnew and Carl Tiler Sold
1991-1992. Mid Table.
1992-1993. Mel Machin resigns as manager as Barnsley do nothing again.
Summer 1993. Viv Anderson becomes Barnsley's first black manager and the nations second.
1993-1994. Stave off relegation.
Summer 1994. Danny Wilson moved from Coach to Manager as Viv Anderson moved to become number 2 at Middlesborough to Bryan Robson.
1994-1995. Wilson works miracles. Finished 6th. Usually good enough for the playoffs but that season the premiership was reduced. Best goal of the season had to be Redfearn blasting in from 20 yards away at Newcastle at a time when they were unbeaten.
1995-1996. Mid Table finish again after showing early season promise. Robbed of an FA Cup 4th round spot when playing Oldham Athletic away by a crazy official (Mr Cain) who gives Oldham a penalty for falling over with no-one near him. Even Gary Linekar was on our side!!1995-1996 Season Review
Summer 1996. Sold dead wood and bought, Clint Marcelle, Neil Thompson, Jovo Bosancic, Paul Wilkinson and Matty Appleby.
1996-1997. Won first 5 games in a row (equalling a club record) and not out of the top 5 all season long. John Hendrie signed from Middlesbrough. Top the league for first time in ages. Finished 2nd and Promoted to the Top Flight for the first time in over 100 years of history. Barnsley celebrates and were GOIN UP! Summer 1997. Signed Lars Lees, Georgi Hristov, Eric Tinkler, Ales Krizan
1997-1998. 1997-1998 Season .Barnsley play their first season in top flight football. Champions in the hearts of the nation for beating Manchester United and Liverpool and for playing some good football. Unfortuneatly relegated at the end of the season. A really enjoyable season none the less.
Summer 1998. Sold Neil Redfearn to Charlton Athletic for £1.3m.
