Wayne and Terry Simpson announce that they have sold the franchise to Brent
Sutter, who
will take over as General manager and Head
Coach.
June 26, 1999 Justin Mapletoft is selected in the NHL Entry Draft (New York Islanders - 5th round)
July 8, 1999 The Rebels select Alexei Zhurba in the first round, 27th overall in the CHL Import Draft.

The Rebels announce that Pat Garritty will become the Assistant General
Manager, Greg
McConkey becomes the Director of Marketing.
The Rebels announce that Lynn Duckering is hired as
Office Manager taking over for Bev Krausher
who is leaving the Club. Rochelle Ramsay is hired as
Administrative Assistant and Brett Kelly is
hired as Director of Ticket Sales.

The Rebels host their first Alumni Game at the Red Deer Arena. The White’s
defeat the
Black’s 14-12.
August 11, 1999
The Rebels announce that the Alumni Hockey Game and Golf Tournament raises
over
$6,000.00 for Canadian Red Cross Abuse Prevention
Services.

The Rebels trade future considerations to the Moose Jaw Warriors for 20
year old
forward Dustin Paul.
August 19, 1999 The Rebels announce Dallas Gaume as Assistant Coach.
August 24, 1999 The Rebels 8th Annual Rookie Camp begins

The White Team defeats the Black Team 7-6 in overtime in the Intra-squad
Game.
Dustin Paul scored 3 times for the Black Team.
Bryce Thoma scored the winning goal for the White
Team. The Rebels re-assign 11 players,
leaving the Club with 31 players.

The Rebels re-assign 19 year old forward Kent Beagle to Fort McMurray of

Alberta Junior Hockey League and 17 year old
forward Andrei Kalytka to the Boston Juniors. Kalytka
was the Rebels second choice in the 1999 CHL
Import Draft.
September 22, 1999
The Rebels trade 17 year old defenceman Jay Batchelor to the Swift Current
Broncos
for future considerations
September 24, 1999
The Rebels open their 8th season in the WHL with a 4-4 tie with the Kootenay
Ice at
the Centrium, in front of 5,127 fans.
The Ice’s Brad Tutchek scored with 36 seconds left in regulation to
get the tie for the Ice.
October 6, 1999
Rebels Head Coach Brent Sutter records his first win in the WHL with a
5-1 victory in
Brandon.
October 15, 1999
The Rebels acquire 20 year old forward Lyle Steenbergen from the Calgary
Hitmen for
future considerations. That evening
20-year old forward Jordan Walker is traded to the Kamloops Blazers
for future considerations. The Rebels
had played the Blazers that night winning 5-2, Walker scored one
goal for Red Deer, and was traded to the Blazers
after the game. Shane Bendera makes 28 saves in his
first WHL win, also sparking a 5-game winning
streak.
October 17, 1999
The Rebels trade 19 year old forward Jarrett Thompson to the Moose Jaw
Warriors for
20-year old forward Brent Hobday. Hobday
is a 4th round pick of the Detroit Red Wings in 1998.
October 22, 1999
The Rebels re-assign 17-year old goaltender Michael Garnett to Kindersley
of the
Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. The
Rebels also acquire 19 year old goaltender Aaron Sproule
from the Saskatoon Blades for future considerations.
October 24, 1999
The Rebels send future considerations to the Seattle Thunderbirds and acquire
18-year
old forward Kyle Wanvig in a three way deal
also involving the Kootenay Ice. Wanvig is a 3rd round pick of
the Boston Bruins in 1999.
October 27, 1999
The Rebels re-assign 17 year old forward Jay Vidrine to the Omaha Lancers
of the
United States Hockey League
November 1, 1999
The Rebels declare Dustin Paul, Lyle Steenbergen, and Brent Hobday as the
team’s
20-year old players. Goaltender Dustin
Schwartz is released.
November 19, 1999
After losing 8 of their last 9 games, the Rebels swing a 6-player trade
with the Prince
Albert Raiders. 20-year old Brent Hobday,
19-year old Steve MacIntyre, 19-year old Regan Darby, and
18-year old Scott McQueen were dealt to Prince
Albert for 20-year old Craig Brunel and 18-year old Ross
Lupaschuk.
November 20, 1999
The Rebels defeat the Portland Winterhawks 4-1 in front of 6,246, the first
sell-out of
the season.
November 28, 1999
The Rebels win 4-2 in Kennewick, WA against the Tri-City Americans.
Dustin Paul
scores 3 goals in 3:10 in the third period.
The Rebels go 2-1-1 on their 4-game road trip into the USA.
December 28, 1999 The Rebels add 16-year old defenceman Jearum Kurtz.
December 29, 1999
The Rebels win 2-1 over the Brandon Wheat Kings at the Centrium.
The Rebels take
only 4 minutes in penalties, a new team record.
There were only 10 minutes in penalties in the game, also
a new team record.
January 8, 2000
The Rebels defeat the Seattle Thunderbirds 2-1 in front of 6,100 fans.
The team’s second
sell-out of the season.
January 10, 2000
The Rebels add 19-year old forward Devin Francon. Francon, spent
two and half seasons
with the Rebels before being traded to Regina
in 1999, was with Melfort (SJHL) at the time.
January 16, 2000
The Rebels and the Calgary Hitmen play live on national television.
CTV Sportsnet
televises the Rebels in Calgary. The
Hitmen win 3-2. Matt Pettinger scores the winning goal with 26
seconds left in the game.
January 28, 2000 ‘The Hockey News’ rates the Rebels logo number 1 in the Canadian Hockey League.
March 18, 2000
The Rebels hand out their team awards before the game with the Kootenay
Ice. Justin
Mapletoft wins the MVP. The Rebels and
the Ice finish in a 2-2 tie.
March 10, 2000
The Calgary Hitmen win 6-4 over the Rebels. It is the Rebels third
sell-out of the season
with 6,170 fans on hand.
March 22, 2000 Justin Mapletoft named the McDonalds ‘Player of the Year’ as voted by the fans.
March 24, 2000
The Rebels beat the Calgary Hitmen 4-2. The Rebels end the regular
season with a 1-9-0
record against the Hitmen for the season.
The Rebels get their fourth sell-out of the season with 6,109
fans.
March 25, 2000
The Rebels end the regular season with a 3-1 loss in Cranbrook against
the Kootenay
Ice. The Rebels end the season with
a 32-31-9 record and in 6th place in the Eastern Conference.
Shane
Bendera starts his 52nd consecutive game in
goal for Red Deer. Bendera sets four single season
franchise records. Most games played
- 69, most wins - 31, best goals against average 3.03, and best save
percentage .895. Justin Mapletoft wins
the team scoring title with 96 points.
March 30, 2000 The Rebels open the playoffs against the Kootenay Ice in Cranbrook. The Ice win 7-4.
April 3, 2000
The Rebels lose 2-1 in overtime against the Ice. Jaroslav Svoboda
scores the winning goal.
Kootenay takes the series in 4 straight games.
Michael Garnett, who played with Kindersley (SJHL) in
99-00, starts in goal for Red Deer.
Garnett makes 31 saves in the loss.
April 5, 2000
Jeff Woywitka and Joel Stepp were named co-winners of the Destiny Charters
Inc. Top
Playoff Performers. The Rebels players
donate $6,300.00 to Central Alberta KidSport.
April 12, 2000
Assistant General Manager Pat Garritty announces he will resign from the
Rebels.
Garritty had been with the Club since 1993
and previously held a Ticket Sales position and Director of
Marketing position with the Rebels.
May 4, 2000
At the annual WHL Bantam Draft, the Rebels select eight players.
The Rebels first round
choice, 9th overall was Colin Fraser of Surrey
B.C.
May 15, 2000
The Red Deer Rebels and BIG 105.5 FM (previously Radio 7 CKRD) extend the
broadcast
contract through the 2002/2003 season.
May 16, 2000
Director of Player Personnel Carter Sears, and Athletic Therapist Dave
(Radar) Horning
each sign two year contract extensions.
May 29, 2000
The contract of Assistant Coach Peter Anholt will not be renewed for the
2000/2001
season. Anholt was the Rebels Head Coach
from 1992-1995, and had been the assistant coach from
1998-2000.
June 6, 2000
Dallas Gaume is named the new Assistant Coach. Gaume was an Assistant
Coach on a
part-time basis the previous season.
June 25, 2000
Rebels goaltender Shane Bendera is selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets
in the 6th
round, 169th overall, of the NHL Entry Draft.
July 4, 2000
In the CHL Import Draft, the Rebels select forward Martin Vymazal with
the 25th overall
pick and forward Ladislav Kouba with the 28th
overall pick. Both players are from the Czech Republic.
August 14, 2000
Dan MacDonald is named a part-time Assistant Coach. Dan has spent
the last three
seasons with the Red Deer College Kings.
August 15, 2000
The Rebels announce that their 9th training camp will open August 24th.
With Rookie
and Main Camp, 111 players will take part.
