PURPOSE -
The aim of the module is to extend knowledge of
the concepts and component parts of modern optical
communication systems.
To give an appreciation of the construction and
operation of modern optical communication networks
and their bandwidth potential. |

INDICATIVE CONTENT-Fibres
and Optical Components:
Review of fibres and their dispersion characteristics,
DSF PMF. Basic propagation modes within fibres.
Non-linear effects in fibres. Polarisation, Electro-
and Magneto-optic effects. Diffraction Gratings,
Fabry-Perot Etalons. Interference Filters. wavelength
tuneable filters. Optical Communication devices:
GRIN rod lenses, passive and active couplers, optical
switches, non-linear optical devices. WDM devices,
Optoelectronic devices and modulators. Optical sources,
LED and Laser LED characteristics. Optical Receivers,
Optical Fibre Amplifiers. Semiconductor laser amplifiers.
Systems: Implementations of optical fibre systems,
system performance, power budget and rise time considerations. |
