|
PURPOSE -
The aim of the module is to introduce relevant networking
theory to enable the design or the planning of computer
networks and to model and critically assess the
comparative performance of the respective network
protocols. |
|
|
INDICATIVE CONTENT- Review:Traffic
and Queuing theory; various probability distributions
such as beta, Poisson and exponential.
Topological Design:
Backbone and local area access design, Heuristic
and Kruskal algorithms; Link capacity assignment.
Protocol design:
Specification models such as finite state machines
and Petri-nets; verification.
Data link protocols:
Data link protocols; throughput efficiency and optimum
frame length analysis.
Transport protocols:
TCP/IP end to end performance. Use of commercial
net work capacity planning and performance prediction
tools such as COMNET II.5. |
