Encik Wong Ho Leng asked the Chief Minister and Minister for Resource Planning: The Sibu inhabitants are generally worried that the impact of water table changes, saline intrusion, etc., might affect the building foundation, particularly those constructed with bakau piles or alan logs. They are also gravely concerned about the probable consequence of sea-water intrusion which would affect drinking water supply. What effective measures would be taken to solve these problems. How are owners of houses built on bakau piles be compensated in the event of shift in house foundation or collapse of houses. Ketua Menteri (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Haji Abdul Taib bin Mahmud):
Tuan Speaker, kalaulah benar seperti dikata oleh Ahli Yang Berhormat ada
kebimbangan orang-orang di Sibu mengenai kejatuhan paras air dalam tanah
ataupun water table, mungkin juga kebimbangan ini tidak meliputi golongan
yang sangat besar. Setakat ini tidak ada bukti yang kemungkinan kejatuhan
water table ini akan berlaku dan oleh sebab itu kebimbangan ini tidaklah
mempunyai asas tertentu yang diakibatkan oleh tindakan kerajaan.
