(Reproduced from Edited Hansard dated 21st November, 1996)

Encik Wong Ho Leng asked the Minister for Infrastructure Development:

(a) It is a well known fact that people have to wait for up to five hours to even more before they could cross the river by ferry at Durin, Sungai Assan and Sungai Maaw, particularly during weekends and public holidays. How many complaints have been received by the ministry on matters concerning crossing the rivers; and

(b) What immediate measure would be taken by the ministry to reduce the time wasted for having to wait for ferries to cross the rivers at the three places.

Menteri Pembangunan Infrastruktur (Datuk Wong Soon Koh): I would like to inform Ahli Yang Berhormat for Bukit Assek that this question has also been raised previously by Ahli Yang Berhormat from SUPP.

(a) The ministry, through the Public Works Department, has received three complaints regarding problems of ferry crossings at Durin, Sungai Assan and Sungai Maaw.

(b) The government has commissioned additional ferry at each of these ferry points to ease the congestion. The government is planning to replace the smaller ferry at Sungai Assan with a bigger one.

Encik Wong Sing Nang: (Supplementary question) Whether the government will consider the concept of build-operate-and-transfer (BOT) of the various ferry service not only in Sibu but throughout Sarawak as the build-operate-and transfer concept is very efficient. If and since the ferry service has been privatized, whether the government would consider that concept to render better service, efficiency and with very high productivity has been implemented? This BOT concept has been implemented and adopted in West Malaysia in many, many of the projects and it has been proved very successful. Thank you, Tuan Speaker.

Menteri Pembangunan Infrastruktur (Datuk Wong Soon Koh): I would like to inform Ahli Yang Berhormat for Pelawan that the government has already looked into the possibility of what you have suggested. Thank you.
