Reproduced from Edited Hansard dated 26th November, 1996)

Encik Wong Ho Leng asked the Chief Minister and Minister for Resource Planning:

(a) How much revenue has the State Government collected or received from oil and gas royalties for the past five years; and

(b) When would the State Government request from the Federal Government for an increase in the royalties for oil and gas from the present 5% to at least 10%.

Timbalan Ketua Menteri dan Menteri Kewangan dan Kemudahan Awam (Datuk Dr. George Chan Hong Nam): Tuan Speaker, in reply to part (a) of the question from Ahli Yang Berhormat for Bukit Assek, I wish to inform him that oil and gas royalties amounting to RM 1.16 billion had been collected in the past five years.

On part (b) of the same question, the State Government had previously written to and raised with the Federal Government the case for an increase in the rate of royalty payment to the state. So far, we have not received any favourable decision. I wish to state that it is not the State Government's intention to let the issue of oil and gas royalty payment rest as it is and is pursuing with the Federal Government. From time to time, we will raise it at the correct forum without the need to resort to publicity. For the information of Ahli Yang Berhormat, an agreement was signed between the state and Federal Government in the 70s which fixed the rate of royalty due to Sarawak at 5% is therefore not easy for the state to ask for a change of that agreement.
