TAYSAN, BATANGAS Kabuhayan 2000 Kabuhayan 2000, launched by President Fidel V. Ramos, presented REACH a check for a cattle fattening project in Taysan, Batangas. The project targets rural poor by creating jobs in the countryside so folks can stay in their communities rather than migrate to overcrowded urban areas. REACH vouches for the farmers who need an accredited organization to
access government money. Twelve farmers received PhP 10,000 to PhP 14,000
($387 to $542 U.S.) to purchase a calf and other supplies. The cows are
sold after six months. Each farmer will purchase four cows over the course
of the project. They will own outright their final cow after two years. By
then, a local management team will lead the self-sustaining project.

MARIKINA, M. M. - Credit Program REACH facilitated the foundation of Samahannga Kristiyanong Mangangalakal (SAKRIUSMA)* which is composed mainly of shoemakers and small traders in Marikina, Metro Manila. The program provides small loans to borrowers with the vision of increasing family income and creating employment. Marikina is the leading shoe production center in the Philippines. Many of the shoes are produced in local homes by families. One family doubled their shoe production in half the time after using their loan to buy a press, allowing them to cut out several soles at the same time rather than by hand. REACH believes development and discipleship can be merged to improve people's conditions and transform values that effect their behavior. Loans of PhP 2,000 to PhP 10,000 ($77 to $387 U.S.) were initially extended to ten women and two men. The participants attend weekly meetings to pay fees and discuss values and business problems. Three groups in all, the first is conducting its own meetings, the second recently completed orientation and received their loans while a third is undergoing orientation. Established: September 1994
SANTA ROSA, LAGUNA -Credit Program The Santa Rosa Credit Project helps women generate extra income for their families. The program is a spiritual anchor in an unpredictable world and emphasizes stewardship. Dressmaking, small-store operations, trading and live stock are just a few of the businesses the women are involved in. They were loaned up to PhP l0,000 ($387U.S.) for six months at a monthly rate of 2.5 percent. A grant from the U.S. based Fieldstead Foundation has enabled the program to extend assistance to a growing number of women. The project may eventually cover education, health and housing assistance through a savings program. Women meet weekly in small groups to find solutions to business problems, discuss values and pay fees. If a member fails to repay her loan the group assumes responsibility. Program procedures, values formation and loan terms are discussed during a two-month orientation before funds arc released. The project serves as an avenue for holistic transformation because a change in people's attitudes and behavior is needed if a project is to leave a lasting economic impact. Established: August 1993
