I would like to thank Ratha Moniratha (check his kewl website) for sending me the orginal copy of Khmer Read and Writing book from Cambodia. This is a rare book since it has the traditional approach to teaching Khmer for over many years. Older adults even said they remembered that book when they were learning how to read and write Khmer in Cambodia .

And a special thanks goes to my mom, for inspiring me to learn how to read and write Khmer.

She told me a story of herself that was very touching. When she was a young girl back in Cambodia, she didn't have money to go to school like the other kids. But she wanted to learn like all the kids that can afford to go to school. Like most poor kids, she would stand outside the school house and look inside the classroom. This was practice because back then the school house was made of bamboo shoots, straws and hays. Anybody can look inside easily. From that position, she was able to look inside the classroom and learn what the school children were learning. She didn't have a 8" by 11" chalkbooard to write with either, so she had to improvise. She would write on the dirty ground with a piece of stick. She was able to gain basic education through this.

And also she would go to the temple(i.e.; "wat") and gain some education there from the monks. Back then, a child would go to school, go work on the rice field, or go help their family. Education is limited to poor children. The only place poor children can aquire some basic education is to go to the temple and have the Monks teach them.

  • Dear Madame:
Thanks for what you're doing. I'm a volunteer for an NGO (Don Bosco TechnicalSchool) here in Papua New Guinea. In a few months I shall be reassigned in Cambodia. It's a bit discouraging to see all those scripts but with your help, I think I could learn so that I could be more useful in that country. thanks.
