Beneath the fresh bouquets
that Papa always hung
when we moved in
layers of wallpaper clung
tight to dreams
hung a hundred years before.
In these old and haunted houses
with secret cubby holes,
narrow creaking stairs
led to attics
spiced with the musty leftovers
of Beverly's beginnings.
