How Poor Were We?

© Elizabeth Larrabee

Welfare?

the Great Indignity.

Sizzling bare feet

on black tar streets?

Those sizzling dog days of summer.

Baggy bloomers

swimming with horseshoe crabs

in the mucky Danvers River.

B & M Baked Beans for supper

Gawking through

Skedd's Bakery window

feasting on undulating smells

of cinnamon and chocolate.

Hunger was so constant

a companion we hardly noticed.

So what's the difference?

We grew up and

we grew fat, anyway.
