Spring and Woodpeckers have arrived
Along with warm southern breezes & bright sunshine , many woodpeckers have arrived. An invasion of Yellow Bellied Sapsuckers. This is the first time we have ever had more than 2 or 3 at a time. As of yesterday, this seems to be dating, mating heaven for at least two dozen of them.
They are so funny, with the males competitive drumming on branches, tree trunks, metal signs, pipes and roofs to see who can drum the loudest to attract the females. They fly, chase, dive bomb, chatter and are completely fascinating. I've gotten many pictures of them, but have not been fast enough to get them chasing each other in flight,it is an awesome sight. Even if I have to take one hundred pictures of nothing for one really good one I'll keep trying.
Besides woodpeckers, the pigeons have enjoyed sunning
themselves on the barn roof
Lovely spring wildflowers are emerging
from under their thick blanket of leaves.
What better harbinger of spring than
the favorite flower of small children?
