Grass Line Starting with Jacob Grass & Priscilla Mills
Parents of Jacob listed below
Jacob came to the USA before our war for independence. His nationality is German. He faught on the side of the British in the NJ militia and at the end of the war went to Canada with the group known as Loyalists in 1783. By 1850 his children and grandchildren were immegrating back to America via Fort Fairfield, Aroostook County, Maine and different areas of Washington County, Maine especially Eastport and Lambert Lake.

George and those before him used Grass; Edgar and his decendents use Grasse. Edgars sister Elizabeth used Grasse. Just found Lewis's family (Edgars younger brother) and their family uses Grass. There are other varients to this line also, DeGrass and DeGrasse. In the later part of 1880's parts of this family started using the DE before their names. There are two possible reasons for these name changes. One was the reports that there was a large estate ($50,000,000) out there involved around the French DeGrasse family. (Articles I read prove this to be untrue, No male heirs thus no DEGrass name, Royal families have very acurate records of their lines). The second is cultual, wanting to fit in with the local groups.
(Antoine Gras/Grass /DeGrasse/DeGrace/ (the reported heir to the Estate) was born in 1755 by all reports and he does not show up in Canada until after 1777, so he can not be a direct line ancestor of our Jacob) (If there is an Estate it belongs to his direct decendants) (Now if we can determine who those people are, then we could eliminate a lot of this fantasy)
(Our Revolution was 1777 to 1783 so Admiral DEGrasse can not be a direct line ancestor to our Jacob) (It is not the DeGrasse Estate up for Grabs.) Common Sence things that need to be considered are timing & location.
I found Graps on Ft Fairfield's few records that survived all the fires and at first ignored it but it turns out that ps or what looks like that is the English ss. I found this also on several of the earlier ME census's. Do not ignore the GRAFF spelling because it also looks like that. In the last month or so I have found the name GRATZ may be another variation for this family of ours. Although GROSS is a distinct family name in its own right I have found records includded under that name that are actually GRASS and vice a versa. When I can prove a GRASS is actually GROSS, I will leave the record on rootsweb in my unconnected file, grasse2, so that other researchers don't have the problem I have had.
Index of Individuals Not ready as of December 12
My line is getting too big to break down into individual families so I now have them set up in Family Groups. Starting with Jacobs Children.
