Kaoru is the successor to the Kamiya Kasshin Ryu technique and runs the only Dojo for this art that uses the sword as an instrument of protection instead of killing. She meets Kenshin while looking for a fake Hitokiri Battousai (Kenshin's alter ego) that has been running around Tokyo killing police officers.

Kenshin ends up helping Kaoru defeat a former Kamiya Kasshin Ryu student (Himura Gohei) who had been expelled from the dojo for his cruelty and evil nature. After the incident Kenshin intended to return to wandering but Kaoru manages to persuade him to stay.

Kaoru runs the dojo all by herself, but is basically the adopted granddaughter of Dr. Genzai who stops in all the time to see how she's doing and to drop off Ayame and Suzume to play for the day. Once Kenshin and crew start hanging around all hell breaks loose in the dojo, but Kaoru seems to enjoy the company.

Although young and very hot headed at times Kaoru is a very caring and energetic person, but also has a gentle and even sometimes fragile side that seems to pop up ever now and again (May 14 Meiji 11 for all who have seen the series).

Sometimes she has a hard time admitting her true feelings for Kenshin but she does get extremely jealous when women (especially Megumi) hang on, flirt with, or pay attention to him.

When Kenshin leaves the Dojo for Kyoto Kaoru is destroyed and refuses to eat or leave her room... Megumi manages to slap some sense into her and thus begins Kaoru's true voyage of self discovery, and her first glimpse into what a truly horrible past Kenshin really has.

She's also hilarious when she gets drunk, and should definitely never be a knife thrower in a circus (poor sano...)
