Sanosuke is a former member of the Sekihou Tai turned gangster at the beginning of the series. All he's searching for is a fight worth his time. One day he is approached by a man named Himura Gohei and asked to defeat the Hitokiri Battousai. If Sanosuke could do this he would then have his fight and upon winning would be the strongest fighter around. Not one to pass up an opportunity for action Sanosuke accepts the challenge.
Even after fighting Kenshin twice, he and Kenshin remain the best of friends and Sanosuke is a regular at both the akabeko restaurant (where he has a tremendously large tab ongoing because he always "forgets" to pay) and the Kamiya Dojo where he sometimes suffers through Kaoru's unique cooking talents.
One spring afternoon Sanosuke is waiting at the dojo for his friends and a travelling medicine salesman by the name of Fujita Goro (Hajime Saitou) happens by to sell some medicine. Immediately seeing his evil eyes and killer's hands Sanosuke tries to attack him but is beaten badly and left as a note to Kenshin (and so begins one of my favorite fights in the entire Kenshin series).
Distraught over his humiliating defeat at the hands of Saitou Sano strives to become even stronger. When Kenshin leaves for Kyoto he sees it as a broken promise (Kenshin promised that Sano and he would not part ways) and follows Kenshin to Kyoto on his own special route... and gets totally lost ^_^
On his travels he runs into a fallen priest named Anji who is practicing his rock crushing technique. Sanosuke then teaches himself the technique in a few days (he told Anji that if he didn't learn it that he didn't learn the technique than Anji could kill him) Sanosuke continues his trek to Kyoto.
He eventually purposely gets himself arrested by the Kyoto police so that he can finally make it there.
