What do Grande Communications, The Wrangler Hat Company and La Prensa have in common?
For the first time in Austin’s history these three companies are breaking tradition and cutting through all the red tape. They are helping the community surrounding Parque Zaragoza in making the summer concerts come through. The budget hasn’t allowed much in the past for summer concerts. Park supervisor David Capuchino asked a life-long friend, Julian L. Fernandez, for help in bringing music to the park. The park has been dormant for many years. No one would actually take charge, working with no budget and trying to bring bands to play with nothing but water to offer. In the summer of 2004 Julian asked friends in the music business to help preserve this grand-old park and its past traditions. He turns to Bradley Williams and Los Pinkys - they agreed, and then he asks Mary Welch y Los Curanderos and they agreed. Then Julian asked an up and coming Conjunto from Houston, Tina y Los Gallitos, and they agreed. The music was exceptional but the attendance for the 2004 shows was good but could have been better. You see the community hadn’t been used to having concerts at Parque Zaragoza.
When Julian was asked to help in this year’s concerts, Julian turned and asked park supervisor David Capuchino if he could invite some national businesses to help out. David said whatever it takes to make this a successful summer concert. Being that Julian is a big advocate for Conjunto music, he asked Tina y Los Gallitos for a return to this year’s concert and they agreed. Julian then asked Jo-Ann Gonzales y Sus Lowriders from San Antonio and they agreed. Now, it was time to put the icing on the cake! Julian asked Los Pinkys and a true Tejano/Conjunto legend, Johnny Degollado y sus Conjunto, for help. They told Julian to count them in. They weren’t going to miss it for anything in the world. Julian is so proud that his compañeros in conjunto rose to the calling.

The Wrangler Hat Company is also an advocate for live music and a sponsor of Los Texas Wranglers. They did not hesitate to help out. Last year they donated over $2,000 in cowboy hats and will continue to do so this year.

Grande Communication also a big advocate in the community’s needs and a supporter of live music in Austin. Grande has taken the helm to assist the performing bands with their expenses and will participate in each Thursday night concert in July. Thank you Peggy and Taylor for helping Parque Zaragoza in preserving this beautiful park and it’s live music concerts.

La Prensa Newspaper has always stood behind this community and will continue it’s outstanding involvement by presenting advertisements and writing about the Conjuntos that’ll be performing in this year’s “PURO CONJUNTO Summer Concerts”

Los Texas Wranglers will be hosting once again this years “PURO CONJUNTO Summer Concerts.” Los Texas Wranglers are known as “Austin’s Premier Conjunto” and will be show casing Texas best in Conjunto music.

Jo-Ann y Sus Lowriders are from San Antonio’s Westside, where all the great conjuntos come from. Jo-Ann is a 17 year-old accordionist that has the Ruben Naranjo y Los Gamblers’ sound.

Tina Vega y Los Gallitos are from Houston. Known as “America’s Youngest Conjunto,” Tina is the youngest bajo-sexto player in America. Her brother, Roberto, was showcased at the 10th anniversary of Selena on Univision. They love Tony De La Rosa style of conjunto. Roberto plays with that same excitement.

Austin this is your chance to come and enjoy the shady pecan trees, cool breezes, cold soft drinks, hot dogs, snow cones and grrreeaat Conjunto Music.

This is truly a great chance to see GREAT Conjunto at its best!
Latin Pointe Event Producer David Chavez was on a promotional radio tour last week with Shelly Lares and Stefani Montiel to promote the 2nd Annual Tejano National Convention and Music Revue on August 12-14 at the Rio Hotel in
Las Vegas. Shelly and Stefani were promoting the Tejana Divas portion of the show with a possible new CD or some new songs with Elida, Shelly and Stefani. The important news is that there is only about 800 tickets available for the
two shows. Last year was a sold-out show. This year is looking that way also but sooner. So get those tickets now
on Latinpointe.com or tejanoticket.com. Guaranteed to be a great show like last year with more panels, speakers
and fan fare.

Carlos Maldonado of Carlos Maldonado y Grupo Fuerte is presently in the studio working on his second CD, Carlos made a lot of noise with his first CD and the hit song "Hello Baby Doll". On this next CD, Carlos invited DLG and his magic accordion along with Lee of Los Desperadoz to be special guests on one of the songs. So be on the lookout for this upcoming project.

For booking Carlos Maldonado y Grupo Fuerte call TJS Bravo at 713-644-3795

Albert y Ensueno
A new CD entitled " Amor de Verdad" should be released in two weeks under the BraVo Records label and distributed under South Central Music Distributors.

Amor de Verdad is the new single and hit song by the multi-talented singer songwriter, Alberto Leal and his new group Alberto y Ensueno. The title cut on the CD has already hit number one status by Professor Lino Nanez of Tejano Music Promotions in Monterey, Mexico. The single song demo was smuggled into Mexico by some touring musicians and friends of Albert Leal. Lino loved it. It became an instant hit.

Long time industry soldier, Charlie Tijerina heard the rumble about the song and sought out lead vocalist, Albert Leal and signed him quickly to Bravo Records. Tijerina believes that Alberto y Ensueno is the full package plus has the sound, image, and talent that will capture the fans on both sides of the border. Bravo Records is releasing the debut CD in early summer with a strong promotional tour in southwest Texas and Mexico.

Albert Leal wrote eight original songs on this project. He handled a majority of the musical and vocal arrangements. The Sinton, Texas native was raised in Mathis, Texas and still calls Mathis home. His musical influences come from his grandfather, Guadalupe Ramirez, and his father Martin Leal. His grandfather was a mariachi and taught the young artist how to play the guitar. Leal’s father was a lead singer with Conjunto Leal, who the young Alberto performed with for four years. Due to being involved in such a musical environment, Alberto learned to play the bass, drums, accordion, keyboards and bajo sexto. His favorite groups growing up were Conjunto Madrigal and Juan Villareal y los Cachorros

His talented musicianship landed him jobs with Alex Montez and Centerfold, Linda Escobar, Ricky Naranjo y los Gamblers, and Inizzcio. As a touring musician he turned down many offers from high profile groups. This musical accomplishment is a dream comes true for Leal. The musical project reflects Albert’s influences and life in South Texas, which is rich in culture and music. South Texas is well known for their musical heroes. We at Bravo Records strongly believe another one is in the making. Without a doubt one can hear the strong traditional conjunto style and influences made famous in South Texas in this production. The music will move your heart and your feet.

For promotional information or bookings of Albert y Ensueno, please call Bravo Records at 713-644-3795.

For the People.
Seems La Mafia takes the title of its latest disc, Para el Pueblo (translated as For the People), to heart.

The Tejano group will headline a concert, benefiting the Red Cross - Greater Houston Area Chapter, June 23 at Verizon Wireless Theater. Also scheduled to appear are Los Palominos and Juan Gotti, who will duet with La Mafia on a remix.

Comic bilingual rapper Chingo Bling also may perform. I'll let you know as soon as he's confirmed.

It's the first time in a while that La Mafia has performed a major show in Houston, so try and check it out. It's definitely highlighted in my calendar.

"I am excited about being asked by the Red Cross to help get the word out to Hispanics and the overall community what the Red Cross does. This concert is just a small way for La Mafia to do our part. We are asking Houstonians to do there part," singer Oscar de la Rosa told me via email. "Come out and support the concert. All proceeds are going to the Red Cross at the time we need them the most - the beginning of hurricane season. Let's not forget the many floods we have experienced these recent years. See you at the Verizon."

There's also a free Red Cross Family Day, from 1 to 6 p.m., on June 12 at Miller Outdoor Theatre. La Mafia lead singer Oscar de la Rosa will co-host and introduce performances by a load of local acts, including Mango Punch, Arthur Yoria, Grupo Atrevido and Inzendio, whose upcoming album was produced by La Mafia member Mando Lichtenberger, Jr.

Details (Concert): 8 p.m. June 23. $25 and $35. Verizon Wireless Theater, 520 Texas. 713-629-3700.

Details (Family Day): 1-6 p.m. June 12. Free. Miller Outdoor Theatre, 100 Concert Drive. 713-284-8352.

Grammy award winning producer, Bob Gallarza is proud to present another great production reuniting the legendary voices of David Marez, Henry Hernandez and Oscar Lawson better known as the Royal Jesters. The response was so overwhelming on Bob’s last CD “Bob Gallarza presents "David Marez, Bringin’ it Back” featuring the voices of David Marez and Joe Posada, that Bob was encouraged to reintroduce the music that you can not find anymore. Gallarza brings his production and arrangement talents to this project with today’s technology for another over the top production.

Some of the radio stations have already received the single “Hermoso Carino” and have started charting the song. Thank you very much.

“Ambicion” on David Marez’s CD went number one on many stations. Again, thank you. The CD has many hits on it. “La Misma Tijera” is the next single that is taking off. Any support would be appreciated.

Back to the Royal Jesters, the Cd is titled “ODYSSEY”. So please enjoy “The Journey” with this treasure of great music from the Royal Jesters. It was a pleasure for Bob to work with these great Tejano legends and professionals. Please enjoy and spread the music like butter on hot tortilla hecho a mano.

Concert to Honor Tejano star SELENA
Ten years after her death, family, musicians to gather and celebrate her life and music

By MICHAEL D. CLARK

Carlos Javier Sanchez / Chronicle
Edward James Olmos, left, and Abraham Quintanilla were part of a news conference Thursday announcing an April 7 Selena tribute concert. Olmos, who portrayed Quintanilla in the 1997 biopic, also serves on the board of the Selena Foundation, an organization that encourages children to stay in school.
A little more than a decade after singing sensation Selena's tragic slaying, her family, bandmates, and musical peers will gather in Houston for an event honoring Texas' most celebrated Tejano star.

On April 7, the "¡Selena Vive!" concert -- featuring Thalía, Gloria Estefan, Carlos Vives, A.B. Quintanilla y Los Kumbia Kings and Selena's former backing band, Los Dinos -- will take over Reliant Stadium.

Selena's family was joined at the stadium Thursday by Mayor Bill White, actor Edward James Olmos and Tejano star Bobby Pulido to announce "¡Selena Vive!" The Reliant Astrodome was visible next door; there Selena gave her final concert on Feb. 26, 1995, before a Houston Rodeo audience of nearly 70,000.

On March 31, she was shot and killed by her former fan club president, Yolanda Saldivar.
Selena was 24 at the time of her death and had accomplished much in a decade of singing. Born in Lake Jackson and raised in a musical family in Corpus Christi, she began recording in 1984 and two years later she won a Tejano Music Award for female vocalist of the year. Selena's shows began to draw fans in the thousands and a deal with EMI /Capitol Records followed in 1989. Her 1994 album Amor Prohibido solidified Selena as an international superstar.

The posthumously released Dreaming of You debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's pop charts in July 1995 and helped break a sales glass ceiling for Spanish-language musicians.

Despite the tragic circumstances surrounding Selena's death, the upbeat mood at the press conference suggested that the concert will celebrate her life and music.

"What a great event for a great purpose," said Mayor White repeating his sentiments in Spanish for the bilingual gathering. "We have a lot of pride that Houston is going to be the host of this particular event."

The lineup is still evolving, but the bill is being put together with an emphasis on mixing Latin pop artists with Tejano and more traditional acts.
Other confirmed performers include Pepe Aguilar, Pete Astudillo, Banda el Recodo, Fey, Ana Gabriel, India, Lucero, Montez de Durango, Jay Perez and Aleks Syntek. Selena's father, Abraham Quintanilla, and sister Suzette said that Selena's musical legacy will be represented during the show.

"Ten years later Selena's music is still very much alive," said Suzette. "Thank you for keeping her memory alive."
Olmos, 57, played Abraham Quintanilla in Selena, the 1997 movie adaptation of her life. The actor and one-time rock musician also serves on the board of directors of the Selena Foundation, an organization that promotes programs to keep children in school. Event host Univision announced that proceeds from "¡Selena Vive!" will go toward 10 scholarships for students looking to pursue higher education at Texas universities.

"Thank you to all of you," he said, "especially the artists."Abraham Quintanilla said that other locations -- including San Antonio and Los Angeles, both cities with large Latin communities -- were considered for "¡Selena Vive!" But he claimed the decision to hold the show across from the site of her final concert came down to one simple reason.

"We're here because that's what I wanted," he said.
The three-hour show will be broadcast live on Univision (Channel 45) beginning at 7 p.m.
BMI Latin also plans to release an album of the concert later this year.

According to Pace Concerts, ticket prices will range from $15 to $95 and will go on sale March 14 through
Ticketmaster outlets (including Foley's, Fiesta and select FYE stores). For more information, call 713-629-3700.

Concert to mark 10th anniversary of Selena's death
Associated Press
Jan. 25, 2005 08:20 AM
HOUSTON - A three-hour concert to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of Tejano singing star Selena has been set for
Houston's Reliant Stadium this spring.

Several performers, including Gloria Estefan and Thalia, are to participate in the event, to be broadcast live April 7 by the Univision Network.

"We can hardly believe it has been so long since she left us, but we are excited to help celebrate her life and her spirit," said Houston
Mayor Bill White.

Other performers who have signed on include Pepe Aguilar, Carlos Vives, Banda El Recodo, Alicia Villarreal, Aleks Syntek, Lucero,
Ana Gabriel, Intocable and the Kumbia Kings.

Houston was the site of Selena's final concert. She played at the Astrodome in February 1995 to more than 60,000 fans as part of
the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The following month, the 23-year-old singer was fatally shot at a Corpus Christi motel. The former president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar,
was convicted of the slaying and is serving a life prison term.

"I promised to keep my daughter's memory alive through her music," Abraham Quintanilla, Selena's father, said last week. "And now,
10 years later, this event is a fitting celebration of not only her music, but her life, as well."
