Esteban Cambiasso is a player that can play in most positions, however recently have been used more and more as a midfielder, by many considered the new Redondo in Argentina and even Brazil, and nicknamed little Redondo, Cambiasso has similarities to Redondo, but is not as skilled with the ball as Redondo, but contrary to Redondo likes to score the odd goal.

Esteban spent season 2000/2001 at Independiente and performed as usual at a high standard and the last couple of months before loan period ended in July 2001 also was captain of the team. His performance got the attention of Bayern Munchen, Valencia, Benfica, Lazio and many other unnamed teams in Europe and South America However Cambiasso signed a new contract with Real Madrid until 2004 in July 2001, before he joined in agreement with Real Madrid on loan to Argentine giants, River Plate. The board have given him the signals that he is part of their long term plans, but at the current time they see it as better that he stays on loan.

His first game for River Plate was in a Copa Mercosul game against Gremio in July (2001), a game in which he also scored but Gremio managed to beat River Plate at Monumental stadium in Argentina 4 - 2. He played about 39 matches and scored 15 goals for River Plate as they won the Argentine Championship

The ceremony was held by former Real Madrid player Quique Wolff and ESPN, the number 10 jersey being framed with his name and a slogan "simplesmente", slogan being the name of Wolff's football show on ESPN, Cambiasso handed the trophy out with teammate Andres Alessandro.

Esteban Cambiasso was given the leader role in the midfield on his return to Real Madrid for the season 2002/03 and has so far proven his worth.
