Casillas started to play better and better, and by the time Illgner got fit, Casillas had convinced the management that he is the future. He played so well after christmas that he got a called up for Spain's European squad in the summer of 2000. He was one of the reasons for Real Madrid's win in the Champions League 1999/2000, and can undoubtly become one of Spain's ever best goalkeepers, if not the best in the world alongside Peter Schmeichel and Lev Yashin.
