Portuguese Luis Figo is an midfilder/winger that has been the rock for Barcelona for years, and has proven himself to be one of the best in the game, moving to Real Madrid is not only seen as a great move because of his abilities, but also because of the rivalry these most likely biggest clubs in the world has.

Season 2000/01: Figo was a questionable runners-up for the FIFA player of the year, most supporters of the game would have voted Figo or Rivaldo, but Zidane won it for his performance for France in the European Cup 2000, but Zidanes performances for Juventus had been abysmal.

However Figo won European Player of the Year award (2nd - Zidane, 3rd - Shevchenko) and was voted as the best player in the world by World Soccer Magazine, during these 2 weeks Figo also put on a great display for Real Madrid, with two great goals and a few assists, truely worthy of the "true" FIFA player of the year, and not Zidane.

Figo's comments to his European Player of the Year Award: "I would like to dedicate this prize to my wife and daughter who have always been at my side." and "I would also like to dedicate it to my team mates at Barcelona, in the Portuguese national side and at Madrid, and to the fans of Portugal and Real as well as to all the Portuguese people who have supported me over the years.".

Figo is after the European Award he received only the third player from Real Madrid to win this award, Honourary President and Real Madrid legend, Argentine Alfredo Di Stefano won it twice (1957, 1959) and Raymond Kopa (1958). And Figo is the second Portuguese player to receive this award, Eusebio received it in 1965.

Luis Figo received the FIFA player of the year award for 2001. Beating David Beckham and Raul, second and third respectively. Joseph Blatter said: "He creates goals and scores them, he has the touch of an artist and those skills make him the complete footballer of our time". Figo said about getting the award: "I played in a team which made it possible for me to be here,"
