Our Sons Made Us a Meal
 by Cheryl Hansen
Well today was the day I was daring. They have been wanting to help me fix a meal & clean up, so I finally said yes today. Now in the past they have fixed a cake all by themselves, we have it on video. It was such a neat experience. They even cracked the eggs by themselves. Please read "They made the cake & ate it too" This was an adventure, no I did not have the video camera on, but I should have. The menu today was.... mashed potatoes meat loaf peas & corn biscuits gravy OK, so we start on this rainy afternoon. I say rainy not to complain about the weather. See in our house, it is a beautiful day because God made it. So it is up to Him how He wants it that day. I say rainy for the fact, that surrounded what our 2 year old did. It was his job to take the potatoes out of the fridge. He is learning to count, so this was great practice for him. I gave him the pot, he put it on the floor, (my floors are spic & span, so don't worry) then he started dropping them in. I told him not to drop, but put them in, & showed him what I meant. Well as you may expect the next two went in, drop, drop. Just as I was about to stay no more dropping, his words....Hey Mommy, I sound like God's rain, drop, drop, drop, see. What a little stinker, he listened after that, but just HAD to drop the last 3 "raindrops" in. :) Peeling the potatoes, was cute, I peeled, they tried to taste them. We got that step all completed. Now to the meatloaf. Oh they loved that. Cracking the eggs, adding the other ingredients, mixing it up. Shaping it. Hey Mom we can't be done, this is too much fun!! But, we were, the meatloaf was ready to go in the oven. The peas & corn just had to be mixed, to make a "cool" combination of colors. Disappointment came, when yellow & green did not make blue this time though. :), they thought, the yellow corn, & green peas would make blue. Oh well guys, sorry. The biscuits, almost made it in the oven in a pyramid type form. But, I caught that. I gave them a 8 by 8 square pan. Our 4 year old thought the biscuits should not touch each other in the oven, so he put them away from each other. But then, he decided it was not going to fit, so his new plan, was to put them on top of each other. :) Now all the steps were done, we were waiting for it to be done. They wanted to set the table. Which is a fight in the house for who will get to do it. So they all got excited when all 3 got their turn today. When we sat down to eat, they ate everything on their plate. Which is not unusual. But, see I could tell by the conversation, it was a sense if "we did it" What a wonderful feeling. Clean up time for the easier dishes were also done by them. They took turns washing the dishes. The fact that preparation time took much longer, the clean up took much longer was no longer a problem. The fun we had, the connection we made, the satisfaction they had all were worth it. Would I do it again? Yep!!!! What a neat experience!
