Vacation in History
I remember like it was yesterday. Although many years have passed. I remember our first family trip. We lived in the western part of New York State, & we were going on vacation to Massachussetts. Vacations did not happen every year, so this was an exciting time. The year was 1968, the car that we drove was a blue impala. I remember, getting in the car, with my parents, my grandfather (my Father's father), & my brother and sister. I do not remember the trip there at all, so my guess is I was probably asleep. The trip was to see my Father's family (aunt & uncles & cousins).
Our first family & actually only family vacation, turned out to be a major part of my life. It holds a memory, that has not left me.
Here is the story, thru the eyes of a child, mine.... when I was 6
The house had a white picket fence around it. They grew blueberries, & other things, but I just remember the blueberries. The garden was next to the house. This was my father's Uncle's house, next to them lived his aunt & her family. In between the 2 houses was a small hill, that I had lots of fun going up & down.
The things that I keep in my heart are the times that Uncle Ralph asked me to help pick the blueberries. The time that Aunt Marion would make blueberry muffins, and blueberry pie, or many other things. Another fond memory I have is every morning, I got to sit in front of this mirror, I mean the seat was just the right size!! So I got to see Mom, brush thru my waist length hair. I got to see her face as she did this, making the braids just the way I liked them.
I can picture the church we went to. It was a very small church, with lots of loving people. It had wooden benches.
On a particular night,
I was sitting on the floor, oh how I loved the floor. I liked to curl up against the chair or couch, but this time it was the couch. The doilies in the room were beautifully hand made. Family was all around us. We were watching the T.V. because the adults said a man would be walking on the moon today, for the first time. I thought to myself, walking on the moon, so I ran outside to look at the moon. Just as I expected, I did not see anyone up there. I think it was a way for them to get the TV that night. I wanted to watch cartoons. But, no they insisted, it was real. Men were going to walk on the moon. I sat their totally bored. I still remember the man, getting out, holding the American flag, & saying his famous words...
One small step for man, a giant step for mankind.
Now back then, to me no big deal, I mean C'mon, who were they kidding, he was not on the moon, I checked, I was just outside, & no one was on the moon. So it was just another TV show. (Until later years)
Another site we saw, was the Plymouth Rock. I remember it was under a shelter of some sort. Near the coast. I remember my mother saying it is smaller than she imagined. I thought, yeah, really, if they landed on it, then how was there room for the people to get off the ship. I also remember looking at a plaque.
This piece of history, had a large impact on our family. Edward Winslow was our ancestor.
To this day, I am amazed how much of history we got to see, just in the one & only vacation we took. I am truly thankful for that one vacation. For being one, it really stuck in my mind, & is now a cherished memory.
